Mariners purchased the contract of INF Chris Taylor from Triple-A Tacoma.

Taylor, a fifth-round pick in 2012, was batting .328/.397/.497 with five home runs and 14 stolen bases in 75 games this season in Triple-A. His arrival likely means a drop in playing time for the struggling Brad Miller. Taylor is worth a flier in AL-only leagues and even some deeper mixed formats assuming he gets regular at-bats.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Thursday that the hope is that Jesse Crain (shoulder) will begin throwing off the mound sometime in the next 10 days.

Crain is now recovered from the right biceps surgery he had last October, but he's still working on strengthening his shoulder. The Astros signed the veteran reliever for $3.25 million over the winter, but he's no lock to pitch in the majors this year.

Dexter Fowler (intercostal) has yet to swing a bat or pick up a ball.

The Astros were originally hoping that Fowler would be ready at the start of the second half, but he's still a ways off from returning. These injuries tend to linger, so the Astros don't want to take any chances. He'll need a minor league rehab assignment before being activated, so it's probably safe to rule him out until August at this point.

Ruben Tejada (head) said Thursday that he feels no symptoms.

Tejada left Wednesday's game after he was hit in the helmet with a pitch, but he passed a concussion test and feels no lingering effects. He's out of the lineup Thursday, but should be back soon enough.

Cole Hamels fanned 10 while holding the Giants to one run in eight innings in Thursday's victory.

Hamels has been about as effective as anyone in the National League over the last two months. He has gone 11 straight starts without allowing more than three runs, bringing his overall ERA down from 4.43 to 2.72. Of course, since he's pitching for the Phillies, he's still just 5-5 on the season.

Tim Hudson lost despite giving up just a pair of unearned runs over six innings Thursday against the Phillies.

Hudson certainly hasn't pitched as well the last month and a half as he did early on, but he also hasn't had much luck; he's had four outings since June 29 in which he's allowed one or two runs and he's gone 1-2 in those games. The Phillies' runs today were aided by a passed ball in the first and a Michael Morse error in the fifth.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that Ehire Adrianza aggravated his right hamstring strain and could be placed on the disabled list.

Adrianza recently missed nearly three weeks with the very same injury and was forced to leave Thursday's game. It's a tough break, as he has hit safely in 11 out of his last 12 games. If Adrianza ends up on the DL, it will be interesting to see if the Giants consider bringing up Dan Uggla.

Brandon McCarthy pitched six innings and allowed just one run Thursday in a win over the Rangers.

Combining his last two starts with the Diamondbacks and his first three with the Yankees, McCarthy is 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA since June 27. He has benefited from an easy schedule during that span, though. It'll continue Monday, when he faces the Rangers again, but things will get more difficult after that.
