49ers placed WR DeAndre Smelter (ACL surgery) on the reserve/NFI list.

The reserve/non-football injury list works the same as reserve/PUP, so Smelter will be ineligible to play in San Francisco's first six games. Smelter tore his ACL last season at Georgia Tech. The 132nd overall pick in May's draft, Smelter might have been a day-two selection without the injury.

49ers waived DL Lawrence Okoye, K Corey Acosta, LB Steve Beauharnais, CB Mylan Hicks, OT Sean Hooey, WR Mario Hull, WR Chuck Jacobs, WR Nigel King, LB Shawn Lemon and FB Trey Millard.

Okoye signed a reserve/future contract in January. Still only 24 (in October), Okoye is a freak-of-nature athlete for his 6-foot-6 frame, but it simply isn't translating to football. The fact that he can't even crack the 49ers' practice speaks ill of his development.

Julius Thomas is expected to require surgery on his broken hand, and will be sidelined 4-5 weeks.

Specifically, Thomas needs surgery on a finger tendon. For what it's worth, Thomas is getting a second opinion on Tuesday. He can safely be ruled out for Weeks 1-3, and is highly questionable for Week 4. Considering Thomas' injury history, it's not a guarantee he'll be back for Week 5. It's a major concern for the Jags' entire offense, as Thomas' presence won't be commanding attention in the red zone as Blake Bortles looks to build on his big summer. Clay Harbor is the next man up at tight end. Already a low-end TE1, the injury-prone Thomas is firmly a TE2 for the final week of drafting.

Montee Ball appears to be in danger of losing his roster spot in Denver.

He won't be a part of Denver's first cuts, but he might not make it when the Broncos trim to 53 this upcoming weekend. Ball is squarely behind C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman, while Juwan Thompson is making a run to be Denver's No. 3 back. "Special teams is a big factor with him and Juwan," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We'll see. I'm fine with Montee." If Ball were cut on Saturday, he would go through the NFL's waivers process. "Right now it's C.J., Ronnie, then Juwan, then me," Ball acknowledged. "So I guess just what it is."

Steelers waived G/C Miles Dieffenbach, WR Kenzel Doe, WR C.J. Goodwin, RB Braylon Heard, DE Joe Kruger, DT Joe Okafor, OL Collin Rahrig, CB Jordan Sullen, OT Kevin Whimpey and S Ian Wild.

TE Cameron Clear, DE Niko Davis and TE Ray Hamilton were waived/injured, and should revert to injured reserve.

Steelers placed OT Mike Adams on the reserve/PUP list.

A total flop as the 56th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Adams showed up to Steelers camp with a back injury and never got into a practice. Pittsburgh has a lot of talent in the skill positions, but has struggled drafting during the tenure of GM Kevin Colbert. Adams has been a huge miss.
Aug 31 - 4:22 PM

Seahawks placed CB Jeremy Lane (arm, knee) on the reserve/PUP list.

Lane tore his ACL and broke his arm making one of the best plays of the Super Bowl. It's more likely than not that Seattle's would-be slot corner spends the entire year on reserve/PUP.
Aug 31 - 4:16 PM

Steelers placed K Garrett Hartley on injured reserve, ending his season.

Hartley suffered a severe hamstring injury in Pittsburgh's third preseason game. The Steelers have replaced him by trading for Josh Scobee.
