Jonathan Schoop belted a three-run homer Monday in the Orioles' defeat of the Athletics.

The three-run shot off A's starter Chris Smith gave Baltimore a 5-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning. Schoop also had a big showing in Sunday's series finale against the Angels and he now boasts a .302/.351/.538 slash line with 27 home runs and 91 RBI over 123 total games this season.

Chris Smith surrendered five runs -- four earned -- over 4 1/3 innings Monday as the Athletics fell to the Orioles.

Smith issued two walks and gave up six hits, including a solo homer to Adam Jones in the bottom of the fourth inning and a three-run blast to Jonathan Schoop in the bottom of the fifth. The 36-year-old right-hander is now 0-3 with a 5.56 ERA in 43 2/3 innings with Oakland. He hasn't earned a win at the MLB level since way back in 2008 with the Red Sox.

Wade Miley held the Athletics to two earned runs over six-plus innings Monday for his seventh win of the season.

Miley again struggled with free passes, issuing four of them, but he easily out-dueled A's starter Chris Smith and the Orioles' offense backed the 30-year-old left-hander with seven runs of support. Miley yielded five hits and struck out six while working into the top of the seventh inning. He's now 7-10 on the year with a 5.11 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, and 118/76 K/BB ratio in 26 starts covering 132 frames.

Steven Brault has been moved to the bullpen at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Brault has had an excellent season for Indy as a starter, but the Pirates desperately need left-handed relief help. The 25-year-old southpaw will work one relief inning Tuesday and then likely pitch out of the bullpen on back-to-back days. He could join the big club after that.

Carlos Gomez (shoulder) expects to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday, the first day he's eligible.

Gomez had minor surgery to remove a cyst from his right shoulder. He's slated to throw, shag flys and possibly swing a bat on Tuesday. It's unclear whether he might need a short rehab assignment before returning, but either way it sounds like fantasy owners will get him back later this week.

Andrew Miller departed an appearance Monday against the Red Sox with an apparent injury.

Miller threw seven pitches -- with only two of them going for strikes -- before walking off the mound and into the clubhouse. His velocity ranged from 88-92 mph. It was his second appearance since returning from tendinitis in his right knee, but it's unclear if that's what he's dealing with again. The Indians should have an update soon.

Steven Matz will undergo surgery this week to repair irritation of the ulnar nerve in his left elbow.

Matz was given an injection in his elbow Monday, but rather than wait to see if that would help him improve enough to return later this season, the Mets have decided it would be best for him to go under the knife now. The left-hander has reportedly been pitching through pain all season, and it's been reflected in his 6.07 ERA over 13 starts. Teammate Jacob deGrom had the same operation last September and returned for the start of spring training. It's possible Matz could be brought along a little more slowly given his past elbow issues, but he should have a good shot to be ready on Opening Day if all goes smoothly with his rehab.
Aug 21 - 9:43 PM

Matt Davidson (wrist) will be cleared for a rehab assignment if he gets through a workout Tuesday with no issues.

Davidson has missed the last two-plus weeks with a bruised right wrist. It's looking like he could return in the next week or so.
