Jason Hammel took a loss to the Yankees despite turning in a quality start on Wednesday.

He allowed three runs on six hits in six innings of work but his teammates failed to give him any run support. He issued two walks and struck out seven batters in the ballgame. Didi Gregorius' solo home run in the third inning started the scoring. The Yankees added single runs charged to Hammel in the sixth and seventh frames. He has a dismal 1-6 record and 6.20 ERA after nine starts. He won 15 games for the Cubs last year.

Steven Souza drove in three runs with a pair of homers in a 5-2 victory over the Angels on Wednesday.

He hit a two-run jack in the second inning and teamed up with Colby Rasmus to hit back-to-back solo shots in the seventh frame. Both longballs were served up by starter Ricky Nolasco. Souza has turned himself into a useful fantasy outfielder this year by batting .255/.365/.458 with seven home runs and 26 RBI in 182 plate appearances.

Alex Colome retired the side in order in the ninth inning while notching a save against the Angels on Wednesday.

He was protecting a three-run lead and made quick work of Luis Valbuena, Andrelton Simmons and Ben Revere. No-drama saves have become standard practice for the Rays' closer. Colome has a 2.25 ERA with 12 saves and 17 strikeouts in 21 innings.

Erasmo Ramirez earned a win by tossing six innings while allowing two runs against the Angels on Wednesday.

He started off in shaky fashion by allowing a two-run shot to Albert Pujols in the first inning. That was the only real difficulty he faced all evening. He surrendered just four base hits and one walk while striking out two batters. He owns a 3-0 record with a 3.00 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. This was his second start since replacing Blake Snell in the rotation. He made 11 appearances in relief previously.
May 24 - 10:48 PM

Chris Sale allowed four runs -- three earned -- in 7 1/3 innings Wednesday in a victory over the Rangers.

Sale finished with just six strikeouts, ending his streak of 10-K games at eight. Still, he's happier to have the win. It wasn't one of his better efforts, but he's now 5-2 with a 2.34 ERA this season.
May 24 - 10:47 PM

Sam Dyson took his fifth loss after failing to retire any of the seven Red Sox he faced Wednesday.

Yes, seven batters. Dyson entered this one with a 3-1 lead, and Jeff Banister didn't take him out until the Red Sox were up 8-3. That's practically criminal from Banister; Dyson had been a lot better since coming off the DL, but he still entered this one with a 9.42 ERA. The lone leash just didn't make any sense at all. Whatever ground Dyson had made up these last few weeks is all given back now. He was charged with five runs, four of which were earned. His ERA is back up to 11.93.
May 24 - 10:46 PM

Mike Trout doubled twice and scored a run in Wednesday's loss to the Rays.

He doubled in the first inning and rode home on an Albert Pujols dinger. He finished 2-for-4 in the ballgame. Trout is flying well over his stellar career rates in just about every category. He is batting .347/.466/.760 for a 1.266 OPS with 15 home runs, 34 runs scored, 35 RBI and nine stolen bases. The best player in the game keeps getting even better.
May 24 - 10:42 PM

Mookie Betts went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk versus the Rangers on Wednesday.

Betts has 17 RBI in 16 games as a leadoff man after driving in 13 runs in 26 games while batting third.
