Shae Simmons will have his forearm examined this week Dr. Ed Khalfayan.

Simmons has been bothered by right forearm discomfort since early March and can't seem to get over the hump. Greg Johns of MLB.com says the Mariners have again slowed his throwing program. Simmons is likely to be placed on the 10-day disabled list at the end of this week.

Kevin Gausman has been named the Opening Day starter for the Orioles.

Gausman will take the mound April 3 at Camden Yards against the visiting Blue Jays. Dylan Bundy is scheduled follow him in the O's second regular-season game. Gausman, 26, boasts a 1.80 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 13/2 K/BB ratio in 10 innings (three starts) this spring in the Grapefruit League and brings considerable fantasy upside into 2017.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker said he's planning to meet with pitching coach Mike Maddux and GM Mike Rizzo on Monday night to discuss the closer situation.

Koda Glover has looked like the frontrunner for the past couple of weeks, but he got lit up in his last Grapefruit League appearance Friday against the Cardinals, watching his spring ERA jump from 1.13 to 3.72. Shawn Kelley makes for a pretty good fallback option for the Nats as a guy coming off a 2.64 ERA and 80/11 K/BB ratio over 58 innings in 2016, though he still carries some durability concerns. There should be more clarity by the middle of this week.

Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen said Monday that Steven Matz is working on shortening his arm angle to put "less bang" on his troublesome left elbow.

Altering pitching mechanics to compensate for discomfort in a specific area is often how minor injuries turn into major injuries. Matz has been scratched from his final turn in the Grapefruit League rotation due to irritation in his left elbow, and he felt some lingering tightness Monday while throwing on flat ground from 70 feet. The young southpaw is ticketed for the 10-day disabled list to open the 2017 regular season. Seth Lugo is probably going to take his spot.

Tom Gorzelanny was sent for tests on his left shoulder Monday.

Gorzelanny hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game since March 16 due to left shoulder discomfort. He was sporting a rough 9.45 ERA through 6 2/3 innings this spring. The veteran southpaw is in Mets camp on a non-guaranteed minor league contract, having registered a 21.00 ERA in seven relief appearances last season with the Indians.

Sean Gilmartin (shoulder) faced live hitters on Monday morning in Mets camp.

Gilmartin hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game since March 8 due to shoulder trouble and can probably be ruled out for Opening Day. The left-hander was a longshot for the Mets' roster anyway after posting an awful 7.13 ERA in 17 2/3 innings last season at the major league level.

According to George A. King III of the New York Post, the Rays have shown interest in Yankees utilityman Rob Refsnyder.

King notes that the Yankees subbed Refsnyder into their Grapefruit League game against the Rays on Sunday, having him play an inning in left field and four in right field. Refsnyder went 1-for-1 with a double and a walk at the dish. He's fallen down the depth chart in New York after his disappointing showing in 2016, but the 26-year-old posted promising numbers throughout the minor leagues and was once considered a sizable part of the Yankees' future. King reported back in early March that the Yankees were listening to offers on Refsnyder.

Steven Matz (elbow) threw on flat ground from about 70 feet Monday morning in Mets camp.

Matz has been scratched from his final Grapefruit League start due to irritation in his left elbow. And while the Mets are claiming this is a minor issue, the left-hander needed surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow last October and he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2010, after being drafted in the second round in 2009. Matz figures to open the 2017 regular season on the 10-day disabled list, with Seth Lugo likely taking his rotation spot.
