Ryan Hanigan (hand) will not be activated from the disabled list Wednesday.

That's the day the Red Sox had been targeting him to return. The club could be delaying a decision with their catchers, as Blake Swihart has played well of late and the Sox don't want to lose Sandy Leon, who is out of options. Either way, Hanigan will surely be activated later this week.

Brandon Phillips (thumbs) is back in the Reds' lineup Wednesday.

Phillips sat out the last two games with soreness in both of his thumbs. With Phillips returning to the leadoff spot, Billy Hamilton has been moved back down to the No. 9 spot.

Brad Peacock (intercostal) hopes to resume throwing off a mound next week.

Peacock had a setback with his intercostal strain earlier this month but was cleared to resume throwing after having an MRI last Friday. There's no timetable for his return.

Colby Rasmus (infection) was hospitalized overnight into Tuesday.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said that Rasmus is "actually improved," but he also sounded less certain that the outfielder would be ready to leave with the club for their road trip that begins Thursday. There's no talk of the disabled list at this point, but it doesn't sound like Rasmus' return to the lineup is imminent. "There’s still a little bit of achiness in there and still a little bit of discomfort," Hinch said. "I think the smart thing for us is just to let the doctors continue to monitor him and get the infection out of there."

Twins released INF Ryan Wheeler.

Wheeler, who will turn 27 next week, hit just .233/.243/.315 in 74 plate appearances at Triple-A Rochester. He'll now look for a minor league deal elsewhere.

Cubs pitching prospect Duane Underwood is headed to Chicago to undergo an MRI on his right elbow.

Underwood, who is arguably the team's pitching prospect with the most upside, felt discomfort in his last outing for High-A Myrtle Beach. "We’ll find out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "He was really raw and young when we got him and he’s developed really well. He’s got great stuff. The nature of pitching is there’s going to be stops and starts."

Eury Perez (torso) lined out as a pinch-hitter in Tuesday's loss to the Nationals.

Perez was injured Sunday when he collided with Cameron Maybin in left field, but he escaped a major ailment. He'll be fine.

Will Middlebrooks (ankle) grounded out as a pinch-hitter in Tuesday's loss to the Mariners.

Middlebrooks was removed from Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks with an ankle injury that occurred when he stepped on a bat in the on-deck circle. He's expected to avoid the disabled list.
