Josh Reddick (oblique) is not expected to be ready for Opening Day.

Reddick has progressed in the right direction since tweaking his oblique three weeks ago, but he just doesn't have enough time to prepare for the opener. The outfielder is expected to return to game action over the weekend. Ben Zobrist will handle right field until Reddick is ready, with Eric Sogard filling in at second base. Tyler Ladendorf and Billy Burns now have a shot to crack the Opening Day roster.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Friday that Tyler Clippard will serve as the team's interim closer while Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is sidelined.

The announcement certainly comes as no surprise. Doolittle (shoulder) is slated to play catch on Friday, but he's still expected to miss around the first month of the season. Clippard will handle the ninth inning until Doolittle is ready, making him mixed-league worthy in fantasy leagues.

Justin Verlander left Friday's game versus the Blue Jays with an apparent injury.

Verlander called out the trainer after having to cover first base on a play. It was rainy in Florida, so he probably slipped and tweaked something. The Tigers will provide an update on Verlander's status later Friday. He allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings before exiting.

David Freese (elbow) is expected to return to action on Saturday.

Freese suffered a hyperextended left elbow during a collision in Wednesday's game and is taking a couple days off as a precaution. He's batting .282 with a homer and seven RBI in 14 games this spring.

Kole Calhoun (triceps) is expected back in the lineup Saturday.

Calhoun is sitting Friday after having to leave Thursday's game following a hit by pitch in his right triceps. The Angels are just being careful, though, as the outfielder is fine.

Royals released LHP Noel Arguelles.

The Royals invested $7 million in the Cuban defector in 2010, but he never came close to reaching expectations. Arguelles just turned 25 in January, but it remains to be seen how much interest he'll receive given his 5.59 ERA and 255/237 K/BB ratio over 407 1/3 career minor league innings.
Mar 27 - 1:42 PM

Chris Sale (foot) is on pace to make his season debut on April 12 against the Twins.

That's the final game of the White Sox' first series at home. Sale threw a simulated game on Friday with no issues and could appear in a minor league game early next week. It's been four weeks since the left-hander suffered an avulsion fracture in his right foot and he's progressed without any setbacks.
Mar 27 - 1:27 PM

Josh Reddick (oblique) said Friday that he's "shooting for Saturday or Sunday to get back in lineup."

Reddick got through a couple rounds of batting practice Thursday with no issues and now feels ready to test things out in game action. The outfielder has been on the shelf for three weeks but has progressed in the right direction since then. He is not, however, expected to be ready in time for Opening Day.
