Vincent Velasquez pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs Wednesday against the Royals.

Velasquez bounced back nicely from giving up three runs in the first two innings, with the only other run scoring after he exited in the seventh. He struck out seven and walked one. While he didn't factor into the decision despite leaving with the lead, he certainly earned another start with the performance.

Edinson Volquez yielded five runs in five innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Astros.

Volquez struck out eight and walked just one while aiming for his fifth straight win tonight, but he was undone by a couple of homers. It's the first time all year that he's allowed five earned runs.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said he's not optimistic George Springer (wrist) will be able to avoid the disabled list.

Hinch told reporters Springer's wrist is "causing great concern" with the club. Springer was hit on the right wrist by an Edinson Volquez pitch in Wednesday's win. He'll surely undergo X-rays before the team's next game on Friday, so the team should have a clearer picture of his prognosis prior to that contest.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports the Dodgers will sign Cuban pitcher Yadier Alvarez to a $16 million deal when the international signing period begins Thursday.

Deals can't be consummated until the period officially begins on July 2, so for now it's a handshake agreement. Passan reports the Dodgers are planning to "go huge" during the signing period, with Alvarez representing the biggest feather in their cap. The Dodgers have long been viewed as one of the frontrunners for the hard-throwing 19-year-old.

Carl Crawford (oblique) left Wednesday's rehab game with High-A Rancho Cucamonga after being hit by a pitch.

The Rancho Cucamonga Twitter feed said Crawford "went down" and "limped off the field on (his) own power." The outfielder can't catch a break, as he's currently rehabbing a strained right oblique that has kept him out since late April. The Dodgers should provide an update on Crawford's newest ailment on Thursday.

Starlin Castro knocked in the go-ahead run with an infield single as the Cubs beat the Mets 2-0 in 11 innings Wednesday.

Castro legged out his little chopper to third, scoring Anthony Rizzo in the process. The Cubs then added a second run on Miguel Montero's single. Castro also doubled earlier in the game. It was just hit seventh double of the year after he had 33 in 2014 and 34 in 2013.

Jon Lester blanked the Mets for seven innings on Wednesday.

Lester struck out seven and walked none in one of his best starts as a Cub. Granted, the Mets aren't really hitting anyone at the moment, but as difficult of a year as Lester has had, he'll take what he can get. Unfortunately, that didn't include a win, as the Cubs didn't take the lead until the 11th.

Rays activated LHP Matt Moore from the 60-day disabled list.

Moore will start Thursday for the Rays, his first start since April 7 of last season. The southpaw owned a 2.95 ERA and 24/8 K/BB ratio over 21 1/3 innings while rehabbing in the minors. Moore was an All-Star in 2013 and, while he'll have some bumps along the way, should enjoy a return to form eventually. Whether that's in 2015 is still anyone's guess.
