Brandon Morrow (finger) threw off a mound Thursday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.

Morrow has been on the disabled list since early May with a torn tendon sheath in his right index finger. "It was good," the right-hander said of Thursday's short workout. "I still had the tape job on my finger so it’s not completely there, but the bullpen was fine." He could be a relief (or starting) option for Toronto in late August.

Red Sox prospect second baseman Wendell Rijo went 2-for-5 with a double and a triple for Low-A Greenville on Wednesday, raising his season line to .267/.351/.434.

Rijo struggled in May and June, hitting .242/.308/.358 despite a .331 BABIP, but has rebounded in July, hitting .291/.355/.618 with a .325 BABIP. Rijo will turn 19 in early September, and is likely to spend the rest of the season with Greenville before going to High-A Salem in 2015.

Twins acquired RHP Stephen Pryor from the Twins for 1B/DH Kendrys Morales; assigned him to Triple-A Rochester.

It's essentially a salary dump. Pryor has spent the majority of the 2014 season at Triple-A Tacoma, where he owns an underwhelming 4.65 ERA in 31 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander could join Minnesota's bullpen soon, but only as a middle reliever.

Mariners acquired 1B/DH Kendrys Morales from the Twins for RHP Stephen Pryor.

Morales is back in Seattle after hitting just .234/.259/.325 in 162 plate appearances with the Twins, who signed him to a prorated one-year, $12 million contract in early June. The 31-year-old tallied 23 home runs and 80 RBI last season for the Mariners and will try to recapture that magic down the stretch. He was given a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the M's last fall and declined it, leading to his extended unemployment.

Mets prospect lefty Steven Matz struck out four batters over seven innings for Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday, scattering two hits and one walk.

The two hits were a second inning home run by Sean Coyle and a fourth inning double by Blake Swihart. Matz has been dominant during his six starts in the Double-A Eastern League, holding the league to a .235/.274/.338 with an 8.3 K/9. He primarily relies on a mid-90s fastball with heavy sink and needs significant improvement on his secondary pitches, but his performance at a higher level has been very encouraging.
Jul 24 - 2:31 PM

Cardinals prospect right-hander Alex Reyes struck out five batters over six innings for Low-A Peoria on Wednesday, allowing three hits, two walks, and one run.

Two of the three hits were doubles, and hitters have a .205/.328/.305 off Reyes for the season. He has the potential to be a frontline pitcher, but his below-average command could prevent him from reaching his ceiling. He has a 5.7 BB/9 for the season, but has dominated Low-A hitters and his WHIP is only 1.382. Reyes won't turn 20 until the end of August, and will likely spend the rest of the season in the Midwest League.
Jul 24 - 2:25 PM

Rockies outfield prospect Raimel Tapia went 2-for-5 with a home run for Low-A Asheville on Wednesday.

Tapia is hitting .331/.387/.463 for the season, and is hitting .351/.430/.500 in July. He started slowly, but has displayed an innate ability to make solid contact and has the potential to be a batting champion in the major leagues. The Rockies promoted David Dahl to High-A Modesto, and Tapia could be next.
Jul 24 - 2:16 PM

Marwin Gonzalez is in the Astros' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon versus the Athletics.

Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday's game with soreness in his right hamstring -- something he's been dealing with since last week. But it's a manageable injury and he'll start at shortstop on Thursday. Gonzalez is batting .294/.333/.412 so far in July. He took over starting duties from Jonathan Villar at the end of June.
