White Sox signed OF Tyler Colvin to a minor league contract.

Colvin refused a minor league assignment after failing to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, hoping to net a big league deal elsewhere. That didn't happen and he's now resurfaced in the minors with Chicago. He'll probably need an injury or two to get a shot with the Pale Hose.

White Sox released OF Jared Mitchell.

The former first-round pick was just never able to progress as hoped. Now 26, Mitchell was off to a 2-for-40 start at Triple-A Charlotte.

Eric O'Flaherty (shoulder) will undergo an MRI Sunday.

O'Flaherty was already placed on the disabled list Saturday with what the A's called a left shoulder strain, but they're sending him for an exam in order to get a better handle on the situation. The results of the MRI are expected to be available on Monday.

Yasiel Puig (hamstring) will perform running drills for the second straight day on Sunday.

It's certainly a great sign. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that he expected Puig to begin a rehab assignment soon, and it's looking like he'll be activated when first eligible on May 10 as long as he can avoid a setback. Puig sports a .279/.380/.465 batting line with a pair of homers over 11 games for Los Angeles this season.

Will Middlebrooks is absent from the Padres' lineup Sunday.

It looks like just a day of rest. Yangervis Solarte is at third base in Middlebrooks' place, while Cory Spangenberg is at second.
May 3 - 1:26 PM

Charlie Morton (hip) isn't expected to be activated until late May/early June.

Morton threw six innings and 93 pitches in an extended spring training game Saturday and will next have a bullpen session Tuesday. He's expected to begin a rehab assignment after that and could use his entire 30-day allotment before rejoining the Pirates' rotation.
May 3 - 1:08 PM

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Sunday that he plans to play the recently promoted Joey Butler "a lot."

Butler will play regularly versus lefties while Desmond Jennings (knee) is out but is also expected to see some starts against righties, as well. He's in the designated hitter spot and hitting fifth on Sunday. The 29-year-old is worth a flier in AL-only leagues.
May 3 - 1:06 PM

Tyler Lyons will be recalled to start on Tuesday versus the Cubs.

Tim Cooney flopped in his chance at the No. 5 starter spot last week, so now Lyons will get a chance. The southpaw was off to a great start at Memphis, posting a 2.91 ERA and 26/6 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings. He could receive 2-3 starts while Marco Gonzales (pectoral) works his way back.
