Tommy Medica went 5-for-5 with two homers, four RBI and four runs scored as the Padres blasted the Braves 10-1 on Friday.

Medica had plenty of time to impress while Yadier Alonso was out and did nothing with it, hitting .217/.265/.261 with no homers in July. As a result, expectations were that Alonso would go back to starting against righties after coming off the DL this week, with Medica merely filling in against lefties. They can play both at the same times on occasion, but putting Medica in the outfield isn't ideal. It'll be interesting to see if the huge game gets Medica a start against Ervin Santana on Saturday or if the Padres simply stick to the plan.

Eric Stults limited the Braves to an unearned run over 6 1/3 inning in a win Friday.

Stults has been an improved pitcher these last six weeks, though without really progressing to the point at which he'd be worth playing in fantasy leagues. He's now 4-13 with a 4.94 ERA on the season.

Mike Minor was tagged for five runs in five innings by the Padres in a loss Friday.

It's Minor's third lousy outing in his last four starts, with the only decent effort coming against the Padres last week. He's actually had a really weak schedule of late, yet his ERA has risen steadily anyway, landing at 5.42 for the moment. The Braves need to seriously consider sending him down in an effort to get him turned around. David Hale could serve as a stopgap starter or Cody Martin could be given an opportunity.

Jacob Petricka pitched a wobbly ninth on Friday, allowing three hits and a run before ultimately saving Chicago's 10-8 win over the Twins.

We'll use the term "nailed down" in very loose fashion here. It took a lot of hammering. The White Sox came into the ninth leading 10-7, only to see Petricka give up three straight singles to start the frame. To be fair, two of them were infield singles. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Petricka was able to induce Kurt Suzuki into an RBI groundout before striking out Kennys Vargas and Oswaldo Arcia to end the game. Phew. It's outings like this that make Chicago's closer situation incredibly difficult to predict.

Jordy Mercer doubled twice, walked and scored three times in the Pirates' 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks on Friday.

After going down 4-0 in the fifth, the Pirates scored once in the sixth, three times in the eighth and five times in the ninth to win. Mercer's big game tonight came in a rare start in the two hole. He's performed well enough to deserve that spot lately; by month, he's posted OPSs of .422 in April, .594 in May, .735 in June and .824 in July.

Kurt Suzuki doubled and drove in three runs against the White Sox on Friday.

Suzuki ended the game 2-for-4. He hit the third inning double off of White Sox starter Chris Sale and added an RBI single in the seventh and an RBI groundout in the ninth. Suzuki had a chance to do more damage than that, as the bases were loaded in the final frame, but he couldn't come through against Jake Petricka as the Twins lost 10-8. Suzuki has had a solid season, especially in the average and on-base categories, slashing .309/.372/.395. Maybe there's just something in the air in Minnesota that allows catchers to hit for average.
Aug 2 - 1:18 AM

Tony Watson was credited with his eighth win in relief after pitching a scoreless inning against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Watson had a 0.93 ERA when he was named to the NL All-Star team last month. He's given up five runs over 8 2/3 innings in his last eight appearances, but he's picked up three wins during that span anyway.
Aug 2 - 1:17 AM

Vidal Nuno was denied a win after giving up just one run and three hits in six innings Friday against the Pirates.

Nuno left with a 4-1 lead, but that was blown by Randall Delgado in the seventh. As a result, Nuno remains winless in five starts for the Diamondbacks, even though he has a 3.07 ERA during that span.
