Hector Santiago did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's game against the Orioles, throwing five scoreless innings and allowing two hits and three walks.

While Santiago was able to keep the Orioles off the board, he had already thrown 99 pitches by the time the fifth inning was finished. The Angels have used him both out of the bullpen and in the rotation (thirteen starts in seventeen appearances). Despite the occasional struggle, he has a 4.02 ERA and has been a useful piece for the Halos. He'll take on the Tigers next time out.

Jenrry Mejia pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his thirteenth save of the year on Tuesday against the Mariners.

Mejia did walk one batter, but otherwise put up zeroes across the stat-line. The scoreless inning dropped his ERA to 3.80. While the ERA doesn't look particularly sparkling for a closer, Mejia has only given up one run over his last ten appearances. He also has 66 strikeouts in just over 66 innings and is 13-for-15 in save chances since assuming the closer's role.

Manny Machado (back) received an anti-inflammatory injection after Tuesday's game.

Machado was a late scratch Tuesday after his lower back tightened up on him. He's never had back issues before and will be re-evaluated Wednesday to see how much progress he's made. Consider the third baseman day-to-day.
Jul 23 - 1:52 AM

Lucas Duda went 2-for-4 and hit his 15th home run in Tuesday's tilt with the Mariners.

Duda had a nice all-around game. Not only did he smack an eighth inning home run, giving him fifty RBI even on the year, he also stole his third base of the season. You shouldn't hold your breath for another steal any time soon (please don't), but speedster abilities aside, Duda's slashing .261/.357/.485. He's really putting together a nice season.

Mariners recalled RHP Taijuan Walker from Triple-A Tacoma.

Walker will start on Wednesday against the Mets. The young right-hander has posted a 3.60 ERA while striking out nine over 10 innings in his two starts for the Mariners this season. He isn't guaranteed to stay over the long haul, but his upside makes him a worthy pick-up in any leagues where he's available.
Jul 23 - 1:43 AM

Mariners optioned RHP Erasmo Ramirez to Triple-A Tacoma.

He struck out 10 while allowing two runs over seven innings against the Mets Tuesday but gets the boot because the M's needed to clear room for Wednesday starter Taijuan Walker. Ramirez will be back up later this season.
Jul 23 - 1:41 AM

Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 on Tuesday, including an RBI single in the first.

The RBI knock gave Cabrera 77 batted in on the year. Ho hum. Death, taxes, Miguel Cabrera knocking in runs on a nightly basis. What are "things that are a given," Alex? While Mike Trout seems destined for the AL MVP award this year, Cabrera continues to be consistently spectacular. He's slashing .313/.369/.531.
Jul 23 - 1:38 AM

Jacob deGrom threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Mariners to pick up his fourth win on Tuesday.

Jacob deGrom tossed a third straight gem on Tuesday, striking out seven and walking just one over seven frames. It's the sixth straight start in which deGrom has not allowed more than three runs. In the process, he's dropped his ERA to 3.01. This is also the third straight start in which deGrom's gone seven innings. If he can keep lasting deep into games, he'll continue to provide nice strikeout and ERA boosts. He'll square off with the Brewers next time out.
