Nate Schierholtz continued his early season struggles, going 0-for-4 in Friday's loss to the Reds.

Schierholtz, hitting in the cleanup spot in manager Rick Renteria's lineup, also left four runners on base in the contest. He's hitting a paltry .231/.241/.288 with no homers and four RBI in his first 13 games. If the bat doesn't start to heat up soon, he could begin losing playing time to Junior Lake, Justin Ruggiano or Ryan Kalish.

Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-4 in Friday's loss to the Reds.

Rizzo's two knocks accounted for a third of the teams total against Alfredo Simon and company in this one. The 24-year-old has been on a tear at the plate during the first month of the season, slashing .345/.409/.517 with two homers and eight RBI.

Jeff Samardzija pitched well in Friday's loss to the Reds, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits over seven strong innings.

Samardzija punched out seven on the afternoon while walking two. Despite a 1.29 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 22/7 K/BB ratio over 28 innings in his first four starts, he sits without a victory at 0-2. He'll try to tally that first win on Wednesday when he battles the Diamondbacks at home.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura indicated Friday that Nate Jones' back injury is a little worse than the team originally thought.

Ventura offered no timetable for when Jones might be allowed to resume throwing, but it doesn't sound like it will be anytime soon. It's obviously not encouraging news, but those stashing Jones in their DL spot should keep doing so as long as they have room.

Oswaldo Arcia (wrist) took some swings underwater and did some light tee work Friday.

Arcia was given a cortisone injection for his right wrist Tuesday in hopes that it would speed along the healing process. It's not clear when he'll be cleared to take batting practice. The outfielder is hoping to be back next week when first eligible, but that's far from a lock.

Josh Willingham (wrist) lifted weight Friday but has yet to swing a bat.

He won't be allowed to swing until the hairline fracture in his left wrist is fully healed. The Twins had been hoping the outfielder would be ready for activation on April 22 when first eligible, but that's looking unlikely at this point.

Brewers signed RHP Jeremy Jeffress to a minor league contract.

Jeffress elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays earlier this month. He's a former first-round pick of the Brewers and cracked the majors with them before being sent to the Royals as part of the Zack Greinke deal.
Apr 18 - 5:46 PM

David Freese was a late scratch from Friday's lineup due to tightness in his right quad.

Freese dealt with the same injury late in spring training. The good news is that the Angels say it's not serious and he could be available to pinch-hit. Ian Stewart took Freese's spot at third base Friday.
