Twins acquired C Janigson Villalobos from the Padres for RHP Phil Hughes, cash and the 74th overall pick in the 2018 Draft.

Villalobos is a 21-year-old catching prospect who hasn't advanced past rookie ball yet. He was not listed by MLB.com among the Padres' top 30 prospects.

Padres acquired RHP Phil Hughes, cash and the 74th overall pick in the 2018 Draft from the Twins for C Janigson Villalobos.

The Padres essentially just bought a draft pick here. Hughes is expected to report to the big league club on Monday but probably isn't a good bet to stick around very long. The veteran right-hander holds a 5.99 ERA since the beginning of 2016 and was designated for assignment last week.

Khris Davis (groin) will take batting practice Sunday.

Davis is nearly a week removed from a strained right groin injury but is making nice progress. He'll be eligible to return on Thursday but figures to need more time than that.
May 27 - 2:02 PM

Byron Buxton (head) is in the Twins' lineup Sunday.

Buxton left Saturday's game after slamming into the outfield wall. He suffered a cut on his head and is surely sore but is feeling well enough to give it a go in this one. Buxton is in center field and batting ninth against Mike Leake and the Mariners.

Mariners designated INF/OF Taylor Motter for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Herrmann. Motter seems like a better fill-in option than Gordon Beckham at second base for Robinson Cano, but he didn't exactly beg for a shot by hitting .197/.279/.367 at Triple-A Tacoma.
May 27 - 1:57 PM

Mariners optioned 1B/DH Daniel Vogelbach to Triple-A Tacoma.

Vogelbach was up for less than a week and didn't play much. He's hit only .200/.333/.333 over 22 games in the majors this season.
May 27 - 1:50 PM

Mariners placed RHP Nick Vincent on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right groin.

Vincent suffered the injury during an appearance Saturday. It's unclear how long he might be sidelined.
May 27 - 1:49 PM

Kris Medlen has decided to retire from baseball.

Medlen was knocked around in a spot start with the Diamondbacks earlier this month and hasn't pitched much better at Triple-A Reno. The 32-year-old has had a terrible time staying healthy, undergoing a pair of Tommy John surgeries, but he was highly effective before the injuries. He'll retire with a career 3.33 ERA over parts of eight major league seasons.
