Pedro Alvarez went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Wednesday's loss to the Reds to drop his season batting line to .161/.277/.446.
The Pirates had just three hits on the day and struck out 12 times. Alvarez has homered five times and driven in 10 runs to keep his fantasy value afloat, but there's a good chance he'll wind up hitting in the low-.200s again this season.
Athletics claimed RHP Marcus Walden off waivers from the Blue Jays; optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento.
Walden had been designated for assignment on Tuesday. The 25-year-old owns a 3.73 ERA over 90 starts and 24 relief appearances in the minors and will represent depth at Triple-A.
Jose Tabata has been diagnosed with "mild" concussion-like symptoms.
Tabata had to leave Wednesday's game after colliding with the left field wall. Even though his concussion symptoms are apparently "mild," the Pirates are surely going to place him on the 7-day concussion DL. Travis Snider would see a bump in playing time with Tabata out.
Joe Kelly left Wednesday's game against the Brewers with a left hamstring injury.
Kelly was trying to beat out a bunt and grabbed at the hamstring after running through the bag. He had to be helped down the dugout steps, so the odds of him needing a disabled list stint are probably pretty good. Carlos Martinez would be the first choice that comes to mind replace Kelly in the rotation, but it's possible the Cards will elect to leave him in the bullpen and promote someone like Tyler Lyons. Lyons started for Triple-A Memphis Wednesday.
Cody Asche is not in the Phillies' lineup Wednesday.
Asche is hitting just .189/.286/.324 in the early going, so manager Ryne Sandberg is giving his third baseman a breather. Freddy Galvis is at the hot corner Wednesday.
Rangers prospect RHP Luke Jackson fired six scoreless innings Tuesday for Double-A Frisco, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
Jackson, 22, was rocked for seven runs in 3 1/3 innings his last time out, so it was good to see him get back on track Tuesday. Overall, the right-hander owns a 4.40 ERA and 12/5 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 14 1/3 innings this season. Jackson is likely to contribute in the major leagues later this season if all goes as planned with his development.
Jose Tabata left Wednesday's game against the Reds after colliding with the left field wall.
Tabata made a nice running catch, but he paid the price. He looked woozy after getting up and the Pirates trainer was checking his head/jaw area. It's certainly possible that he could have a concussion, but we likely won't know more until later Wednesday or Thursday. Starling Marte, who had been given a day off, took Tabata's spot in left field.
Giants prospect RHP Kendry Flores dominated on Tuesday, allowing three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in six shutout innings for High-A San Jose.
Flores, 22, was signed by the Giants in 2009 and spent four years in the system before making his full-season debut last year. Making 22 starts for Low-A Augusta, Flores posted a 2.73 ERA and stellar 137/17 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 141.2 innings. Pitching in the hitter-friendly California League this year, the right-hander owns a 3.00 ERA and 18/3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 18 innings. Flores is still a few years away from reaching the major leagues, but his excellent command, age and spot on the Giants' 40-man roster should help him begin to move up the ladder this season.
