Hanley Ramirez has resumed taking ground balls at first base in pre-game workouts again.

Ramirez had a setback with his nagging right shoulder issue earlier this month when he started a game at first base in an interleague series, but he's ready to test things out again. However, there's no timetable for when he might play first in a game and the Red Sox now have another right-handed hitting option at the position in Sam Travis, so they won't rush Ramirez.

A.J. Pollock (groin) was scheduled to "throw and hit and do some live running" at the Diamondbacks' spring training complex on Thursday, according to manager Torey Lovullo.

Pollock looks to be making nice progress as he works his way back from a right groin strain. He will not require a rehab assignment before returning and could potentially be activated sometime next week, although a firm timetable hasn't been established.

Taijuan Walker (blister) will throw a bullpen session Saturday.

It will be his first time testing out the blister on his right index finger since he was placed on the disabled list last weekend. If all goes well, Walker will rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation next weekend against the Marlins. "The blister feels good," Walker said. "It’s not bad. It still needs to heal a little bit more, but we’re going to take care of it. It should be good."

Blue Jays optioned OF Dwight Smith Jr. to Triple-A Buffalo.

Smith has picked up one hit in four at-bats in a couple short stints with the big club. He'll return to a .321/.376/.457 line at Buffalo.

Red Sox signed OF Jeremy Barfield to a minor league contract.

Barfield, 28, has spent the last two seasons playing for the Sugar Land Skeeters and was batting .274/.357/.519 with nine homers over 35 games this season. He'll provide organizational depth.

Marlins activated RHP David Phelps from the bereavement list.

Phelps was away for a few days following a death in the family. The Marlins have discussed moving him into the rotation, but he'll presumably return to the bullpen for now.
May 26 - 8:13 AM

Marlins optioned RHP Drew Steckenrider to Triple-A New Orleans.

Steckenrider was only up for a few days, throwing one scoreless inning in his major league debut on Wednesday. David Phelps will be back from the bereavement list to take Steckenrider's roster spot.

Chris Taylor went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Taylor's third hit of the evening, an RBI double to the center field gap, increased the Dodgers' lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. That would stand as the final score. He also made a nice diving catch in center field on a sinking liner. This was his third three-hit showing in his last 10 games. Over the course of 93 at-bats, the 26-year-old is slashing a cool .344/.445/.581 with five home runs and 18 RBI.
