Brandon Maurer held the Marlins to one run over 4 1/3 innings on Sunday.

Maurer was making his first start of the season after pitching in relief at Triple-A, so he wasn't able to give the Mariners much length. What he lacked in quantity he made up for in quality, though, as he gave up just two hits and issued two walks while striking out four over his 4 1/3 innings. Maurer should be able to go a little longer Saturday against the Rangers.

Kevin Slowey allowed two runs over five innings in his first start of the season on Sunday.

Slowey was moved to the rotation after Brad Hand proved ineffective. Slowey had a strong spring and was decent Sunday, giving up just two runs on three hits. The right-hander also fanned three without walking a batter. His next start will come Saturday at the Mets.

Brett Lawrie went 0-for-4 with an RBI groundout in Sunday's loss to the Indians.

Lawrie hit a grand slam last week and has three homers and 12 RBI for the season, but overall he's batting just .127/.182/.254. The 24-year-old is seemingly picked as a breakout candidate every year but has yet to show the consistency needed to take the next step.

Carlos Gomez was ejected from Sunday's game against the Pirates for his part in a benches-clearing brawl.

Gomez flipped his bat and stared at what he thought was a home run off of Gerrit Cole in the third inning. Of course, the ball didn't go out and Gomez had to scramble into third for a triple. Cole took exception to the showboating and barked something at Gomez, which began the fracas. Gomez appeared to swing his helmet at someone, though he didn't connect. It's possible he'll be suspended. Martin Maldonado did connect with a haymaker that will almost surely result in a suspension for him.

Rafael Furcal (hamstring) will move his rehab assignment up to Double-A Jacksonville on Monday.

Furcal is being brought along slowly after he missed a good chunk of spring training with a left hamstring strain. He's expected to be activated on May 6.

Jacob Turner (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Wednesday.

He's slated for 50-55 pitches in the outing. The plan is for Turner to make an additional rehab start after that before rejoining the Marlins' rotation. "If all goes according to plan, it’ll probably be the beginning of May," said Turner, who is coming back from a right shoulder strain.

Twins designated OF Darin Mastroianni for assignment.

The move clears room for the addition of Sam Fuld. Mastroianni has the option of declining the assignment and becoming a free agent.
Apr 20 - 1:56 PM

Martin Prado is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Sunday.

He's just getting a day of rest. Eric Chavez is playing third base Sunday in Prado's place. Chris Owings is also sitting out, as Cliff Pennington is covering shortstop.
