Kyle Schwarber struck out all four times up before being removed for defense Thursday against the Giants.

That's 55 strikeouts in 42 games for Schwarber. He's still drawing walks and hitting solo homers once per week, but he's one of the big reasons the Cubs have disappointed thus far.

Joe Panik went 0-for-4 in Thursday's loss and is 0-for-13 in his last three games.

Panik had a great first week of the season, but in his last 150 at-bats, he's hitting .227 with a .286 OBP. He's never been one for homers or steals, so he has to hit for average to contribute much in NL-only leagues. It's not happening right now.

Brian McCann (concussion) expects to be activated from the disabled list Saturday against the Orioles.

May 25 - 5:20 PM

Tommy Joseph had a homer in the seventh and a walkoff single in the 11th to give the Phillies a 2-1 victory over the Rockies on Thursday.

Aaron Altherr has been the Phillies' best hitter this year, but Joseph has been the best his month; he's hitting .333 with seven homers in May. It makes one wonder why he was hitting sixth today behind three hitters with OPSs in the .600s.

Collin McHugh (elbow) threw off a mound on Thursday.

May 25 - 5:16 PM

Vince Velasquez fanned seven while allowing one run over five innings Thursday against the Rockies.

Hopefully, this was a step forward, though the Rockies lineup is the game's most overrated right now (subtract Coors from the equation and it's the pitching that's carried the team this year). Volquez threw 70 of 94 pitches for strikes, which is exactly what he needs to do to keep improving an ERA that stood at 5.98 coming into this one. It'd have been nice if he could have pitched a little deeper into the game, but the Phillies pen picked him up with six scoreless innings afterwards.
May 25 - 5:15 PM

Travis Shaw is not in the Brewers' lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

Eric Thames is the only lefty starting against D'Backs southpaw Robbie Ray. Hernan Perez will handle the hot corner and bat cleanup on Thursday night. Shaw has gotten off to an impressive start this year (.282, 9 HR, 34 RBI) but has struck out in eight of his last 11 at-bats.
May 25 - 5:15 PM

Nick Castellanos is not in the Tigers' lineup Thursday against the Astros.

He's just getting a breather. Dixon Machado will fill in at third base and bat eight Thursday against Houston right-hander Mike Fiers. Castellanos has gone hitless in his last 12 at-bats and could probably use a night off to clear his head.
