Sam Gaviglio will be activated from the paternity leave list on Friday.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Daniel Poncedeleon is "in play" for Monday's start against the Indians.

The Cardinals need a starter with Michael Wacha (oblique) on the disabled list. Poncedeleon will make his scheduled start for Triple-A Memphis on Thursday but it will be an "abbreviated" outing in case the Cards need him on Monday. John Grant and Dakota Hudson are also candidates to start in place of Wacha.

Johnny Cueto (elbow) will make a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.

He's finally ready for game action after sitting out the past two months with a sprained elbow. Cueto will need three rehab outings to build up his pitch count after missing so much time (he's slated to throw 40 pitches on Saturday). The 32-year-old was off to a stellar start before his injury, logging a 0.84 ERA over 32 innings in March and April.

Phillies optioned RHP Jake Thompson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Thompson had an eventful stay in the majors, logging a one-pitch save and a victory in his two appearances. The right-hander has mostly struggled at the big league level this year (7.20 ERA), though the Phillies will likely bring him back at some point.
Jun 21 - 7:45 PM

Padres activated RHP Phil Maton from the 10-day disabled list.

He's back after missing the past month with a strained lat. The right-hander looked sharp on his rehab assignment, earning a 1.35 ERA over six outings for High-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio. He'll work in middle relief in San Diego.
Jun 21 - 7:16 PM

Padres transferred OF Franchy Cordero to the 60-day disabled list.

Cordero was diagnosed with a bone spur in his right elbow after being pulled from his rehab assignment earlier this week and may require surgery. Now that he's on the 60-day DL, Cordero won't be eligible to return until late July.
Jun 21 - 7:14 PM

Padres placed RHP Phil Hughes on the 10-day disabled list with a right rhomboid strain.

That injury may have contributed to his disastrous outing on Wednesday as the right-hander was lit up for six hits and three runs over two innings in a loss to Oakland. Hughes was designated for assignment by Minnesota earlier this year and hasn't been any better in San Diego, limping to a 6.23 ERA over seven relief outings for the Friars.
