Marlins activated RHP Jose Fernandez from the 60-day disabled list.

Fernandez is ready to rock again, 13 months after undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. The 22-year-old right-hander showed promising signs on his five-start minor league rehab assignment and needs to be owned in all mixed fantasy leagues for what should be an exciting and productive second half of the 2015 season. Fernandez owns a remarkable 2.25 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 257 strikeouts in 224 1/3 career major league innings. He's starting Thursday at home against the Giants.

Marlins optioned RHP Jose Urena to Triple-A New Orleans.

Urena is giving up his rotation spot to Jose Fernandez, who is due to return from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Thursday. Urena posted a decent 4.04 ERA in 42 1/3 innings. He'll get another look soon.

James McCann is not in the Tigers' lineup Thursday.

Bryan Holaday will start behind the plate against the Pirates. It's just a day of rest for McCann.

Dodgers signed RHP Yadier Alvarez.

It's a contract worth $16 million. Los Angeles has been considered the frontrunner for Alvarez for months and there was probably already a handshake agreement in place, but the deal couldn't be announced until the official beginning of the July 2 signing period. Alvarez is a hard-throwing 19-year-old right-hander out of Cuba. He was one of the top talents in this international amateur class.

Yordano Ventura (hand) allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings Wednesday at Triple-A Omaha.

Ventura walked three but struck out four and gave up only three hits. It may be enough to convince the Royals that the 24-year-old right-hander is ready to return from the disabled list. He's been on the shelf since June 13 with ulnar neuritis.

Tim Cooney will make a spot start for the Cardinals on Thursday night against the Padres.

It is Jaime Garcia's turn in the rotation, but he has been scratched with cramping in his left groin. Cooney struggled earlier this season in his major league debut against the Phillies and doesn't look like an overly attractive play Thursday versus San Diego.
Jul 2 - 8:55 AM

James Loney (finger) is expected to return to the Rays' active roster on Friday.

Loney has been on a minor league rehab assignment since Tuesday. He broke a bone in his left middle finger back in late May and will wind up missing around five weeks. The first baseman returns to a .275/.322/.376 batting line, two homers, and 11 RBI in 30 games.
Jul 2 - 8:49 AM

Giants activated RHP Matt Cain from the 15-day disabled list.

Cain will make his 2015 regular-season debut Thursday in the Giants' series finale against the Marlins after missing three months with a flexor tendon strain in his right arm. The veteran right-hander pitched pretty well on his minor league rehab tour and is worth owning in most mixed fantasy leagues. Tim Lincecum (forearm) was placed on the disabled list Thursday in a corresponding roster move.
