Mark Teixeira (lat) could swing a bat as soon as Friday.

Teixeira hasn't played since Sunday due to a lower left lat strain but said Friday that he's feeling much better and looks like he'll avoid the disabled list. "I hope to be back soon," he said. The Yankees' first baseman is batting .231/.330/.443 with 17 homers and 48 RBI over 76 games this season.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that five teams "are said to have shown interest, or at least talked to" the Dodgers about Matt Kemp.

Rival executives have told Heyman that they "have the feeling the Dodgers are ready to move on" from Kemp. It's no surprise, of course, as they have a logjam of outfielders and Kemp hasn't been thrilled about moving from center to left field. Kemp sports a decent .268/.333/.422 batting line with eight homers and 38 RBI this season, but the Dodgers will undoubtedly have to pick up a large portion of the $107 million Kemp is owed after this season in order to find a taker for him.

Braves optioned RHP Gus Schlosser to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Schlosser was only up for a couple days in his most recent stint with the big club and didn't appear in a game. He returns to a 3.65 ERA over 81 1/3 Triple-A frames.

Braves activated RHP Anthony Varvaro from the paternity leave list.

Gus Schlosser has been sent down in a corresponding move. Varvaro has been excellent for the Braves this season, posting a 2.29 ERA and 39/9 K/BB ratio over 39 1/3 innings.

CSNNE's Sean McAdam reports that David Ortiz (back) has told Red Sox manager John Farrell that he's "good to go" for Friday's game in Tampa.

The Red Sox haven't officially posted their lineup yet, but it sounds like Ortiz will be in it. Big Papi didn't play Thursday after exiting Wednesday's game with back spasms, but he's made a quick recovery. Ortiz is batting .251/.346/.501 with 24 homers and 72 RBI for the Sox this season.

Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports that the Blue Jays have been scouting Brandon Barnes.

Saunders notes that the Jays have "not yet put together a deal for Barnes," but a trade of the outfielder "at the right price, could make sense." Barnes is only a career .237/.285/.345 hitter over parts of three major league seasons, but he's a gifted defensive outfielder who can play all three spots.

Athletics acquired RHP Deck McGuire from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations; optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento.

McGuire, who was designated for assignment last week, was the No. 11 overall pick in 2010 but hasn't developed as hoped. The 25-year-old has put up a 4.21 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 115 1/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A.
Jul 25 - 2:22 PM

Justin Ruggiano (groin) is available to pinch-hit Friday.

Ruggiano hasn't played since Tuesday due to some tightness in his groin. The outfielder has made enough progress that he can swing a bat, but he's yet to be cleared to play the field.
