Shelby Miller coughed up three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in the Cardinals' loss to the Padres Monday.

He struck out five and walked three. It was the second consecutive start in which Miller labored and was pulled after 5 2/3 innings, tallying 96 pitches against the Mets on Wednesday and 107 this evening. Undoubtedly, Miller must learn how to be more efficient. That will come in time. He already has down the dominate-major-league-brutes thing, posting a 1.74 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over nine starts.

Ryan Vogelsong was diagnosed with a fractured right hand.

Brutal news for Vogelsong, who tossed five scoreless frames Monday against the Nationals before he was hit in the hand with a pitch while swinging the bat. Vogelsong's wife, Nicole, wrote on Twitter that he has a dislocated joint in the pinky finger of his throwing hand and it's broken above and below his finger. He'll have surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss around six weeks. The Giants don't have an obviously alternative in the minors, so Chad Gaudin is the likely replacement in the starting rotation.

Bartolo Colon pitched the A's past the Rangers by allowing just two runs over seven innings on Monday.

Colon walked as many batters tonight (two) as he did in his first eight starts combined, but he had his best outing in a month anyway, winning for the first time since April 23. He's 4-2 with a 4.31 ERA overall.

Seth Smith went 2-for-4 with a homer, two walks and three runs scored versus the Rangers on Monday.

The A's are hoping Smith's slump is over. His OPS dropped from 1.072 on April 23 to .933 on April 30 to .755 on May 17, but he's now gone 4-for-8 in his last two games. Of course, it was in late April and early May that the A's really needed him. Now that Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp and Chris Young are healthy again, Smith isn't so important to the attack anymore.

Making his first start for the Rangers this season, Jurickson Profar went 0-for-2 with a pair of RBI against the A's on Monday.

Profar drove in both Rangers runs with a groundout and a sac fly. Manager Ron Washington said Profar and Leury Garcia would split time at second, but as long as Profar is up, the Rangers would be crazy not to use him.

Dylan Axelrod held the Red Sox to two runs and four hits in six innings to pick up a win Monday.

It's just Axelrod's second win in nine outings this season, but he's given the White Sox five quality starts, plus two more in which he was pulled in sixth having allowed three or fewer runs. He's now probably moved back ahead of Hector Santiago with John Danks due back and a rotation spot on the line.

Jon Lester yielded six runs -- five earned -- in six innings Monday against the White Sox to take his first loss of the season.

Lester, who entered 6-0, has always had problems with the White Sox. He's now 4-5 with a 5.43 ERA in 10 career starts against the team. He's 87-44 with a 3.64 ERA against everyone else.
May 21 - 12:13 AM

Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer off Jon Lester in the White Sox's victory Monday.

The home run was his second off a lefty this year. He hit 15 off southpaws last season after going without a single homer off a left-hander in 2011. Overall, Dunn has 11 homers this year. He's batting .211 with 13 RBI in 16 games this month after coming in at .148 with 12 RBI in 24 games in April.
