Red Sox signed OF Jeremy Barfield to a minor league contract.

Barfield, 28, has spent the last two seasons playing for the Sugar Land Skeeters and was batting .274/.357/.519 with nine homers over 35 games this season. He'll provide organizational depth.

Marlins activated RHP David Phelps from the bereavement list.

Phelps was away for a few days following a death in the family. The Marlins have discussed moving him into the rotation, but he'll presumably return to the bullpen for now.

Marlins optioned RHP Drew Steckenrider to Triple-A New Orleans.

Steckenrider was only up for a few days, throwing one scoreless inning in his major league debut on Wednesday. David Phelps will be back from the bereavement list to take Steckenrider's roster spot.

Chris Taylor went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Taylor's third hit of the evening, an RBI double to the center field gap, increased the Dodgers' lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. That would stand as the final score. He also made a nice diving catch in center field on a sinking liner. This was his third three-hit showing in his last 10 games. Over the course of 93 at-bats, the 26-year-old is slashing a cool .344/.445/.581 with five home runs and 18 RBI.
May 26 - 1:24 AM

Chase Utley went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Utley had not hit a home run entering action on Thursday, but he finally got that monkey off his back when he socked a solo shot off Michael Wacha in the second inning. The veteran second baseman acts as a nice clubhouse presence, but not so much with the bat, as he is slashing a mere .204/.292/.312 on the season.
May 26 - 1:23 AM

Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.

Gyorko notched a two-run double against Kenta Maeda in the first inning, his ninth two-bagger of the season. The hit bumped his RBI total to an even 20. For the season as a whole, the 28-year-old third baseman is slashing .336/.384/.579.
May 26 - 1:20 AM

Aledmys Diaz went 1-for-4 with a double in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.

Diaz's double off Kenta Maeda was his 11th of the season. He has been on a two-bagger tear of late, having doubled five times in his last four games. The 26-year-old shortstop is working to a .261/.296/.409 triple-slash with five homers, 14 RBI and 19 runs scored in 42 games played.
May 26 - 1:19 AM

Making his first start since May 10, Kenta Maeda surrendered three runs on seven hits over five innings in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Maeda was sidelined for two weeks by hamstring tightness and he looked shaky out of the gate in his return on Thursday, surrendering a two-run double to Jedd Gyorko and an RBI single to Yadier Molina. However, he would settle in as the game progressed, even chipping in with a go-ahead two-run single to help his own cause in the fourth inning. Maeda finished his outing having struck out four, walked two and thrown 78 pitches (49 for strikes). The Dodgers figure to allow him a longer leash with the pitch count when he takes on these same Cardinals on the road next Tuesday.
