Dee Gordon went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Saturday's loss to the Padres.

Gordon drew the Marlins to within 5-2 with an RBI single off Padres starter Odrisamer Despaigne in the fifth inning, but the fish would only score once more as they fell to 20 games under .500. Said horrible record isn't Gordon's fault, as the second baseman is hitting .330/.352/.406 with 23 RBI and 48 runs scored. He's also stolen 34 bases in 47 attempts.

Manny Machado homered for the second game in a row Saturday in a win over the Tigers.

He's hit .381 with four RBI over his five-game hitting streak. Among big league third basemen, Machado is fourth in slugging percentage (.525) and second in OPS (.890). The 23-year-old has emerged as a legitimate MVP candidate and is a big reason why the Orioles are only a half game behind Minnesota in the AL Wild Card Race.

Odrisamer Despaigne supplied a quality start in Saturday's win over the Marlins, allowing three runs on five hits over six-plus innings.

Despaigne allowed two runs in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI singles, with an additional run scoring against him in the seventh to finish off his line. On the evening, he struck out five and walked one. While this start was fine, Despaigne's had his issues with consistency throughout the season and currently holds a 4.75 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. A road start against the Brewers is up next on the schedule as the Padres try to remain a relevant baseball team.

Jose Urena struggled in Saturday's loss to the Padres, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits over five innings.

Urena is getting a chance in the rotation thanks to trades that sent starters Mat Latos and Dan Haren to points elsewhere. It was tough sledding on Saturday. The Padres scored a run in the first inning, then pounced on Urena for three more in the third. Prior to the start, he held a 4.04 ERA across 42 1/3 major league innings. The 23-year-old right-hander owns a 21/17 K/BB ratio and shouldn't be trusted for fantasy purposes at this juncture. A road date with the Braves is up next as he tries to acclimate to the regular starting gig.
Aug 1 - 9:51 PM

Luis Severino will make his major league debut Wednesday against the Red Sox.

After dominating at every level, the Yankees are finally ready to see what their No. 1 prospect is made of. The 21-year-old was brilliant in his last start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, tallying 10 strikeouts over six one-hit innings. Bryan Mitchell will lose his spot in the starting rotation when Severino arrives.

Jason Kipnis will DH Saturday against the Athletics because of a sore right shoulder.

Kipnis was also the DH for Friday's game. The injury doesn't sound serious but it's something to keep an eye on. Utility man Mike Aviles is starting at second base for the Tribe on Saturday.

Charlie Furbush (biceps) is scheduled to throw bullpen sessions on Sunday and Tuesday.

If all goes well, Furbush will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday and could be back with the Mariners by next weekend. Furbush has been one of the more reliable arms in Seattle's bullpen, contributing a dominant 2.08 ERA across 33 appearances this year. Left-handers are hitting .105 against him in 38 at-bats.
Aug 1 - 9:01 PM

J.D. Martinez left Saturday's game with a left knee contusion.

Martinez fouled a ball off his knee in his first at-bat of the game. His X-rays came back negative and the Tigers are calling him day-to-day. Tyler Collins replaced Martinez in right field and could start there Sunday if Martinez is too sore to play.
