Red Sox designated INF Jeff Bianchi for assignment.
With Eduardo Rodriguez, Robbie Ross, and Carlos Peguero all joining the team on Thursday, Bianchi gets the boot. The 28-year-old was just called up from Triple-A on Sunday and didn't get a plate appearance. There's a decent chance he'll pass through waivers unclaimed.
Grant Green will start at first base Thursday against the Tigers.
Meanwhile, Albert Pujols will serve as the designated hitter and Matt Joyce will start in left field. The newly-acquired Kirk Nieuwenhuis is on the bench. This will be Green's first career start at first base, though he has made three previous appearances at the position.
Indians purchased the contract of OF Jerry Sands from Triple-A Columbus.
Sands was called back up from Triple-A with Carlos Santana going on the paternity leave list. The 27-year-old went 8-for-23 (.348) with two doubles and four RBI over nine games with the Indians earlier this season. He'll provide some bench depth over the next couple of days.
Indians placed C Carlos Santana on the paternity leave list.
Santana can remain on paternity leave for 24 to 72 hours. The Indians have called up Jerry Sands to take his place on the active roster.
Indians recalled RHP Austin Adams from Triple-A Columbus.
Adams has allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings with the Indians this season. He'll pitch in middle relief.
Indians placed RHP Scott Atchison on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain.
Austin Adams will replace him in Cleveland's bullpen. Atchison, 39, has posted a 5.74 ERA and 10/3 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings this season. No word yet on how much time he'll need to miss.
Dylan Bundy (shoulder) has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with Double-A Bowie.
Bundy was scratched from Tuesday's scheduled start due to shoulder soreness, but the good news is that an MRI revealed no structural damage. The 22-year-old received anti-inflammatories and should be ready to resume throwing in a couple of weeks.
Carlos Santana is expected to be placed on the paternity leave list.
Santana's wife gave birth to a baby girl Thursday morning. The Indians should make an official roster move soon.
