Logan Morrison is likely to see less playing time when he returns from his thumb injury.

According to beat reporter Bob Dutton, the Mariners want to take "a long look" at Jesus Montero. Montero has been arguably the best hitter in minor league baseball this season and has played well since getting promoted (5-for-14 with three RBI). Morrison's .221 average this year is his lowest in six major league seasons. He could be headed for the bench if things don't improve quickly.

Kyle Schwarber will remain with the Cubs after Miguel Montero is activated from the disabled list.

"We want his bat in the lineup," said manager Joe Maddon. Schwarber is still a work in progress behind the plate but it's hard to send him down to the minors when he's hitting .323 with a .523 slugging percentage. Schwarber has started two games in left field and could see more action there when Montero returns from his thumb injury later this week.

Matt Harrison has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.

The illness might explain Harrison's recent weight loss and lack of velocity. Harrison has only made nine starts over the last three seasons including three this year. He was shipped to Philadelphia Wednesday as part of the Cole Hamels trade. There's no timetable for his return.

Rays placed OF Steven Souza on the 15-disabled list with a fractured left hand.

Souza left Saturday's game after getting hit by a pitch from Joe Kelly. It didn't look good and his X-rays confirmed the worst. The 26-year-old has shown above power this season with 15 homers in 308 at-bats. Brandon Guyer and Grady Sizemore should see more playing time in his absence. The Rays are probably wishing they had kept David DeJesus, who was traded to the Angels earlier this week.

Mets optioned OF Michael Conforto to Triple-A Las Vegas.

New York sent him down to make room for Yoenis Cespedes. Conforto got off to a good start (4-for-7 in his first two games), but went hitless over his last four contests. The 22-year-old should have plenty more chances to make an impact in the big leagues, but for now, he's better off getting regular at-bats in Triple-A.
Aug 1 - 6:49 PM

Rockies recalled OF Kyle Parker from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The move was expected after Corey Dickerson went down with a rib injury. Parker hasn't fared well in the big leagues, batting only .222 with 14 strikeouts in 27 lifetime at-bats. He did hit a single in his only at-bat of the season June 10 against St. Louis.
Aug 1 - 6:32 PM

Athletics recalled RHP Aaron Brooks from Triple-A Nashville.

He'll start Saturday's game against Cleveland. Oakland acquired Brooks Tuesday in the trade that sent Ben Zobrist to Kansas City. The 25-year-old has a 6-5 record in 18 Triple-A appearances this year.
Aug 1 - 6:28 PM

Rockies recalled RHP Scott Oberg from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Oberg earned his promotion by allowing just one run over seven relief appearances for Albuquerque. The 25-year-old has struggled to keep the ball in the yard this season, surrendering eight homers in only 31 2/3 innings.
