Mike Fiers pitched seven innings of two-run ball Friday against the Athletics.

Fiers has pitched quite well his last two times out, lowering his ERA from 6.48 to 4.97. It should be good enough to help him stay in the rotation following Lance McCullers' return from the DL.
Apr 30 - 1:39 AM

Evan Gattis went 2-for-4 and popped his first homer of the year Friday against the A's.

Gattis needs to get it going if he wants to play against righties, and this is a nice first step for him, though the homer came off a lefty. Gattis is hitting .256 with four doubles and a 15/1 K/BB ratio in 43 at-bats since coming off the DL.
Apr 30 - 1:38 AM

Matt Kemp went 2-for-4 and hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the eighth to help the Padres beat the Dodgers 5-1 on Friday.

It has to be particularly sweet for him when Kemp leads the Padres past his former team. His tiebreaking homer came off Chris Hatcher tonight, and the Padres went on to add an insurance run in the ninth. Kemp has seven homers and 18 RBI in 22 games.
Apr 30 - 1:36 AM

Cesar Vargas tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings versus the Dodgers in a no-decision Friday.

Vargas allowed four hits, walked three and struck out six. He figured to be a stopgap in the Padres' rotation when he was called up last week, but with two strong outings against quality offenses (he allowed one run over five innings against the Cardinals in his debut), he figures to get a chance to stick around. He's not recommended outside of NL-only leagues.
Apr 30 - 1:34 AM

Alex Wood struck out nine while allowing one run in seven innings Friday against the Padres.

Wood brought his ERA down from 6.00 to 4.82 tonight. It surely helped some that he was facing the Padres, but he was due for an outing like this anyway. His velocity is better than it was last year, and his curve remains a fine weapon.
Apr 30 - 1:32 AM

Chris Hatcher gave up a three-run homer in a tie game to take a loss Friday against the Padres.

Yimi Garcia or Pedro Baez should have entered the season as the Dodgers' No. 2 reliever, but Dave Roberts has favored Hatcher since day one. That'll probably begin to change now, as Hatcher has given up three homers and walked eight while allowing 10 runs in 10 2/3 innings. Unfortunately, Garcia is on the DL, but Baez is available and Adam Liberatore is making a case for an enhanced role.
Apr 30 - 1:30 AM

Carl Crawford went 0-for-4 on Friday and is 1-for-11 with a walk since coming off the disabled list.

Crawford could have used a hot start upon returning in order to secure the starting gig that was initially expected to be his while Andre Ethier was out. Dave Roberts figures to keep mixing and matching for now and occasionally using Howie Kendrick in left to make room for Chase Utley at second.
Apr 30 - 1:28 AM

Tyler Chatwood scattered five hits over 6 1/3 innings and combined with three relievers on a shutout of the Diamondbacks on Friday.

It's not saying a whole lot, but Chatwood certainly looks like the Rockies' ace from here; he's keeping the ball on the ground and he's amassed a 20/7 K/BB in 29 2/3 innings. It's been good for a 3-2 record and a 2.73 ERA to date. We're guessing he'll continue to be an above average starter, but with Coors weighing him down, he's a streaming option in mixed leagues at best.
