Braves recalled RHP Gus Schlosser from Triple-A Gwinnett.

He'll be up for a couple days while Anthony Varvaro is on paternity leave. Schlosser has a 4.50 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over 12 innings with the Braves this season.

Braves placed RHP Anthony Varvaro on the paternity leave list.

He'll be away from the club for a few days. Gus Schlosser has been recalled to replace Varvaro in the Braves' bullpen.

Padres prospect RHP Matt Wisler allowed one run on four hits in seven innings and struck out seven batters Tuesday for Triple-A El Paso.

The outing was one of Wisler's best since reaching Triple-A, where the 21-year-old has posted a disappointing 5.71 ERA and yielded 14 home runs in 75 2/3 innings (15 starts). Though pitching in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League is a challenge in itself, Wisler also has continued to struggle against left-handed batters this season, with a 6.75 ERA and 41 hits allowed (eight home runs) in 37 1/3 innings.

Cameron Maybin has been suspended 25 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for amphetamines.

It was Maybin's second positive test as you're only given a warning and eventually more testing after testing positive the first time. Maybin is batting just .247/.286/.368 over 62 games for the Padres this season. Jeff Francoeur has replaced him on the roster.

Pedro Alvarez (knee) is not in the Pirates' lineup Wednesday.

Alvarez had to leave Tuesday's game against the Dodgers with left knee discomfort. It appears to be a day-to-day ailment at this point, and he could have a shot to return to action after Thursday's off day. Josh Harrison is at third base Wednesday.

Marlins prospect LHP Andrew Heaney allowed one run on two hits in seven innings Tuesday while striking out eight batters for Triple-A New Orleans.

The highly touted left-hander walked two batters in the outing. Heaney, 23, struggled in his previous two starts following a demotion from the major leagues to Triple-A in early July, as he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits (two home runs) in 6 2/3 innings. But now that he's back on track after Tuesday's outing, it shouldn't be long until Heaney receives another crack at the major leagues.

Astros prospect RHP Vincent Velasquez struck out 10 batters in four scoreless innings Tuesday in a rehab start for the team's affiliate in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

He allowed one hit and one walk in the game. Velasquez, 22, has carved up younger hitters during his three rehab outings in the GCL, with a 2.08 ERA and 19-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 8 2/3 innings. The hard-throwing right-hander was equally impressive at High-A Lancaster prior to landing on the disabled list, as he posted a 2.89 ERA, .179 BAA and 33-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 28 innings over eight games (four starts). He'll likely return to Lancaster in the near future and could finish the season at Double-A if he can stay healthy.
Jul 23 - 2:54 PM

Pirates prospect RHP Tyler Glasnow struck out 11 batters in six scoreless innings Tuesday for High-A Bradenton.

He scattered four hits and walked two in the outing. No pitcher in the minor leagues has been as dominant as Glasnow over the last two-plus months, as he owns a 7-1 record, 0.98 ERA, .169 opponents' batting average and 72-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last 55 1/3 innings spanning 10 starts. The 20-year-old's season at Bradenton is shaping up to be a lot like his 2013 full-season debut, as he's been difficult to barrel (.178 BAA) while missing bats at a high rate (10.6 K/9). However, it's doubtful Glasnow receives a promotion to Double-A until his command improves and he's able to cut some of the free passes (4.5 BB/9) from his game.
