Marlins acquired RHP Jeff Brigham from the Dodgers in the three-team, 13-player Mat Latos trade.

Brigham is one of three pitching prospects that the Marlins are picking up in this massive, complicated trade. They'll also get salary relief on Latos and Michael Morse. Brigham, 23, owns a 4.93 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and 108/54 K/BB ratio in 107 2/3 career minor league innings. He was pitching for the Dodgers' High-A team.

Dan Haren pitched well over six innings in Thursday afternoon's loss to the Nationals, allowing just one run on four hits.

Haren coughed up a solo home run to Ryan Zimmerman in the second inning, but otherwise kept the Nationals in check throughout his six innings of work. He struck out four and walked two on the afternoon. Unfortunately, he had the honor of facing off against a game Max Scherzer and was unable to come away with the win despite the strong performance. A possible trade candidate, whether it come before the non-waiver trade deadline on Friday or in August, Haren currently holds a 3.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 88/25 K/BB ratio over 129 innings. He's set to face the Mets at home in his next start.

Cardinals recalled INF Greg Garcia from Triple-A Memphis.

Garcia has impressed in limited action this season with the Cardinals, but he probably won't ever play enough on the St. Louis infield to carry NL-only fantasy value.
Jul 30 - 2:54 PM

Cardinals designated 1B Dan Johnson for assignment.

Johnson managed just three hits -- all singles -- in 21 plate appearances with the Cardinals. The 35-year-old will probably pass through waivers unclaimed.

Cardinals placed OF Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list with a right quadriceps strain.

Holliday just missed six weeks with the very same injury and it's fair to ask now whether he may be done for the remainder of the 2015 season. Stephen Piscotty figures to take over as the Cardinals' primary left fielder, with newcomer Brandon Moss also seeing some starts there. Piscotty is worth an add in deep mixed fantasy leagues.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Mariners are telling teams that they plan to keep Hisashi Iwakuma.

Seattle is well under .500 and Iwakuma is due to become a free agent this offseason, so it's an odd stance for the M's to take. The 34-year-old right-hander has posted a rough-looking 5.10 ERA in 47 2/3 innings this summer, but his peripherals are much better and he'd surely fetch some prospects in this market.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Cubs are "aggressively trying to include Starlin Castro in any deal."

It's notable that Addison Russell started at shortstop on Wednesday. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said earlier this week that Castro would not be traded, but that's not a promise he can keep. The 25-year-old is batting just .237/.271/.305 in 406 plate appearances this season and his defense at shortstop has deteriorated. There's been talk of interest from the Padres.
