Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon recorded three tackles in his preseason debut.
He played the entire first half. Weatherspoon missed all of 2014 with an Achilles injury and sat out the first three preseason games with a hamstring injury. He made several stops in the running game and held up Kapri Bibbs so a teammate could strip the ball in the first quarter, though the play was eventually called back on review. If he can stay healthy, Weatherspoon will be a big addition to the Cardinals' defense, but staying healthy has always been the problem.
Falcons SLB Brooks Reed is will miss six weeks after undergoing groin surgery.
A second opinion on Reed's long-troublesome groin determined he needed the operation. Reed could be a candidate for the Falcons' injured reserve-designated for return list. Kroy Biermann figures to open the season as Atlanta's "Otto" strong-side linebacker. It's going to be another long year for the Falcons' defense.
Falcons rookie WR Justin Hardy caught two passes for 16 yards in Thursday night's preseason finale.
Quiet this preseason, Hardy finally made his presence felt on a 70-yard punt return in Thursday night's game. He was the 107th overall pick in May's draft. Hardy will likely open the season no higher than Atlanta's No. 4 receiver behind Julio Jones, Roddy White, and Leonard Hankerson.
Chris Johnson rushed 11 times for 45 yards and caught one pass for 10 yards in the Cardinals' fourth preseason game.
He ripped off several long runs against the Broncos' second- and third-team defenses, showing nice cutback vision and acceleration. Johnson put a move on a defender and gained 10 yards on a swing pass early in the game, and busted through the line on a draw play to pick up a 3rd-and-11. Johnson should be expected to look good against second-team talent, but his acceleration appeared to be intact after an offseason away from football. Johnson should put pressure on Andre Ellington and David Johnson for snaps.
Colts rookie RB Josh Robinson (concussion) is expected to be ready for Week 1 against the Bills.
Vick Ballard (hamstring) and Dan Herron (shoulder) both dropped out of Thursday night's preseason finale, perhaps paving the way for Robinson to open the season as Frank Gore's primary backup. Ballard will likely be a part of Saturday's final cuts. The extent of Herron's shoulder injury is unknown.
Cardinals' team reporter Jody Jackson said Michael Floyd's (dislocated fingers) status for Week 1 is still "up in the air."
Floyd started catching soft passes this week, but Jackson said no one from the organization has said they expect Floyd to play. With just 10 days until the season opener, Floyd has yet to return to live drills. We will not have a great feel for Floyd's status until the Cardinals publish an official practice report next week, but right now he appears to be questionable at best for Week 1.
Marlon Brown caught 3-of-3 targets for 64 yards in Thursday's preseason finale.
Brown caught a 42-year deep bomb from Matt Schaub with his fingertips. It was a "remember me" play headed into final cuts. Brown closes the preseason with five catches for 100 yards. Not exactly electric numbers, but Brown's spot should be secure as first-rounder Breshad Perriman battles a PCL injury.
Dion Lewis was held out of the Patriots' preseason finale.
It's a good sign for Lewis' roster chances. Lewis is competing with a cast of characters for the old "Vereen Role" as a passing-down back in New England's offense. A well-traveled former fifth-round pick, Lewis may have the lead on Brandon Bolden, James White, and injured Travaris Cadet.
