Brian Duensing (back) will begin the season on the disabled list.
Duensing has been dealing with a back issue for a couple of weeks and will require some more time. The Cubs signed the southpaw to a one-year, $2 million deal over the winter.
Matt Szczur has made the Cubs' Opening Day roster.
Cubs president Theo Epstein said Wednesday that Tommy La Stella will also break camp with the team. Szczur was out of options this spring and would have almost certainly have been scooped up on waivers, so it makes sense that he's sticking around.
Shin-Soo Choo was scratched from Wednesday's lineup after undergoing some dental work.
It doesn't sound like something that will keep him out of action for long. Choo is projected to serve as the Rangers' primary designated hitter this season.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Pirates have placed Jared Hughes on release waivers.
Hughes has really struggled this spring, allowing 15 runs (12 earned) on 16 hits and four walks over 9 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old has compiled a 2.41 ERA over the past three seasons and induces plenty of ground balls, but he has averaged just 5.0 K/9 in that time. He's under contract for $2.825 million this season.
Dodgers reassigned INF Charlie Culberson to minor league camp.
Culberson batted .250/.345/.333 over 20 games during Cactus League action. He'll provide minor league depth.
Addison Russell (back) said Wednesday that he feels 100 percent.
Russell hasn't played in a week due to back soreness and isn't ready to return to the lineup just yet, but he's expected to do some hitting in the cage on Wednesday. Barring a setback, he's still on track to be ready for the season.
Jeurys Familia has been suspended 15 games for violating MLB's joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy
This confirms a report from Billy Witz of the New York Times. The original expectation was that Familia would receive a suspension in line with Aroldis Chapman's 30-game domestic violence ban last year, but recent reports indicated that the suspension was expected to be lighter. It was ultimately half of Chapman's suspension. Familia could be eligible to rejoin the Mets as soon as April 20. Addison Reed will fill in at closer for a couple of weeks.
Chris Tillman (shoulder) is tentatively scheduled to pitch in an extended spring training game on April 11.
Tillman is ready to ramp up his throwing program after recently receiving a cortisone shot in his shoulder. He's scheduled for bullpen sessions on Saturday and then Monday and Wednesday next week in Baltimore before progressing to a live batting practice session on April 8 in Sarasota. There are still a bunch of steps here, but it looks like the Orioles have mapped out a plan that could get him in the rotation by the end of April.
