Brandon Moss went 2-for-3 with his fourth home run of the spring Tuesday in the Royals' 7-4 Cactus League win over the White Sox.
The solo homer was a no-doubter off Chris Volstad in the bottom of the fourth inning. Moss is batting .302 with a .949 OPS this year in the Cactus League as he prepares himself to serve as Kansas City's primary designated hitter. The veteran slugger signed a two-year, $12 million free agent contract with the Royals in late January.
Amir Garrett and Rookie Davis have earned the final two spots in the Reds' rotation.
Bronson Arroyo is also expected to join them, Brandon Finnegan and Scott Feldman in the rotation, although he'll have to make it out of his final tune-up with no issues first. If he falters, Cody Reed could get a spot. Robert Stephenson will be part of the bullpen. Garrett is a former college basketball player who has turned himself into a nice pitching prospect, having put up a 2.55 ERA and 132/59 K/BB ratio over 144 2/3 frames between Double- and Triple-A last season. His upside makes him a worthy deep-league flier, but he probably shouldn't be trusted in standard mixed leagues yet.
Adam Duvall finished 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI in the Reds' 9-3 victory over the Dodgers on Tuesday in Cactus League play.
Duvall hit an RBI single in the first inning, a solo homer in the fifth inning, and a two-run shot in the seventh inning. He's up to five home runs this spring, after delivering 33 homers and 103 RBI in 150 games last season for the Reds. The 28-year-old outfielder should again be a reliable source of power in 2017.
Josh Rutledge was lifted from Tuesday's game against the Pirates with an apparent injury.
Rutledge looked like he tweaked something while running from first to third. The Red Sox should have an update on his status shortly. Marco Hernandez could make the roster as a bench player if Rutledge has to miss time.
Matt Cain allowed four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings Tuesday in a Cactus League start versus the Cubs.
Cubs minor leaguer Chesney Young hit a two-run homer in the third inning and Javier Baez had an RBI single in the sixth. Ian Happ then plated Baez with a ground-rule double, after Cain had departed. The veteran right-hander reached 99 pitches, but the results obviously weren't great. He holds a 7.84 ERA in this year's Cactus League.
Yankees re-signed LHP Jon Niese to a minor league contract.
The Yankees released Niese on Sunday, but the two sides have worked out a new pact. It's a good move for the left-hander, as the Yankees could use some rotation depth so Niese might eventually get a shot.
Joey Gallo went 2-for-4 with a homer in the Rangers' 4-3 win over the Rockies on Tuesday in Cactus League play.
Gallo contributed an RBI double to the Rangers' three-run fifth inning and then cranked a solo shot in the seventh. The big slugger is still trying to carve out a real role at the major league level and will likely open the 2017 regular season back at Triple-A Round Rock.
Felix Hernandez struck out four batters in a two-inning start Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks.
Hernandez allowed a solo homer to Brandon Drury in the first inning but otherwise looked sharp in the planned abbreviated outing. He got in some extra work in the bullpen to stay on track for his Opening Day start next Monday against the Astros.
