Matt Adams went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Reds.

He opened the scoring in the second inning by homering off starter Sal Romano. Adams had a nice run of fantasy value while Freddie Freeman was on the disabled list but his playing time has been diminishing of late. Matt Kemp is expected to be activated from the disabled list soon so Adams will probably function as power off the bench most days. He has a .273 batting average with 17 home runs and 54 RBI.

Jay Bruce went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI in the Indians' 10-1 rout of the Royals on Friday.

Bruce was even better for the Reds last year than he was for the Mets this year, but he floundered after the deadline deal that sent him to New York. This time around, he's been outstanding post-trade, going 13-for-32 with three homers, four doubles and 11 RBI in nine games to date.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his seventh homer of the month and singled Friday against the Royals.

Six of those homers have come in his last nine games. He's up to 28 homers for the year, and it certainly looks like he'll finish with at least 34 for the sixth straight season. His career high is 42, established in 2012 and matched last season.

Nomar Mazara (knee) had his knee examined after Fridays' game and it was determined that he has no structural issues.

Mazara tweaked his knee during Friday's game, but it appears to be a minor issue. Look for him to return to the lineup at some point over the weekend.

Ian Kennedy fell to 4-9 after allowing five runs in 2 2/3 innings Friday against the Indians.

Kennedy has given up 18 earned runs in 19 innings this month, pushing his ERA back over 5.00 for the first time since mid-June. It sure doesn't look like he'll be opting out of the final three years and $49 million in his Royals contract at season's end.

R.A. Dickey struck out nine batters but allowed four runs in six innings to absorb a loss to the Reds on Friday.

The knuckleball was dancing as he missed a lot of bats but when the Reds made contact the ball flew far. The veteran tossed five innings of scoreless baseball before the train derailed in the sixth frame. He served up home runs to Adam Duvall, Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker to account for all four runs. The 42-year-old falls to 8-8 on the season with a 3.98 ERA in 24 starts. He will climb the mound for an interleague start against the Mariners next week.
Aug 19 - 12:03 AM

Jake Junis gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings out of the pen Friday against the Indians.

Junis had a nice start Monday against the A's, but with the Royals having an off day Thursday and another one next Monday, he was available out of the pen tonight. He's expected to get a start against the Rockies next week.

Whit Merrifield went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts Friday and is hitless in 15 at-bats the last three days.

Merrifield isn't going anywhere, but as nice of a job as he's done for the Royals this year, he's still not an ideal leadoff man; he's walked just 21 times in 452 plate appearances, giving him a .321 OBP to go along with his .284 average. Fortunately for him, the Royals lack any better alternatives. He'll probably snap out of this little slump soon enough.
