Ryan Pressly gave up four runs without retiring a batter Thursday against the Rays.

Pressley allowed just one run in his first eight innings of the spring, but now he's given up seven runs and walked four batters in his last two appearances. That's not the way he wanted to finish as he tries to establish himself as the No. 2 man in the Minnesota pen.

Steven Souza singled in both of his at-bats Thursday, raising his spring average to .356.

Souza has dealt with a hand blister the last week, but he returned to action yesterday and he's reached base five times in six plate appearances since. His strong second half of the spring should ensure that he's a full-time player initially. He always figured to be a regular, but he's one without a lot of margin for error.

Joe Mauer hit his first spring homer Thursday off the Rays' Jake Odorizzi.

Mauer is a cleanup man now and needs to act like it. Or something. We're not quite sure why the Twins' best OBP guy, who hasn't slugged even .400 since 2013, is batting fourth, but expectations are that he'll occupy that spot against right-handers initially.
Mar 30 - 4:21 PM

Johnny Giavotella did not make the Orioles' Opening Day roster.

He'll start off with Triple-A Norfolk, as will Pedro Alvarez. Giavotella had an outside shot of making the club as a backup infielder but instead that role will be filled by Ryan Flaherty. The 29-year-old had an underwhelming spring, hitting just .255 over 55 Grapefruit League at-bats.
Mar 30 - 4:18 PM

Ronald Torreyes went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBI as the Yankees crushed the Phillies 14-1 on Thursday.

Torreyes has had a shaky spring, but he's gotten it together lately, which is a lot more important for the Yankees now that they'll be without Didi Gregorius for the first month of the season. Torreyes figures to get most of the starts at shortstop, with Pete Kozma serving as the backup.
Mar 30 - 4:14 PM

Luis Severino pitched five innings of one-run ball Thursday in a win over the Phillies.

Severino could have had a letdown today after being named the Yankees' fourth starter before the game, but he instead turned in his best start of the spring. He ends the month 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA. It's too much to expect consistency from him in the early going, but he should be more good than bad.
Mar 30 - 4:12 PM

Pedro Alvarez did not make the Orioles' Opening Day roster.

Instead he'll begin the year with Triple-A Norfolk. Johnny Giavotella, who was competing for a backup infield spot, will also be sent down when the seasons opens. Alvarez slugged 22 homers for the O's in 2016 but he's a liability defensively and doesn't hit left-handers well. He'll see time in Baltimore at some point but not out of the gate.
Mar 30 - 4:12 PM

Jerad Eickhoff was pulled after giving up six runs in two-thirds of an inning Thursday against the Yankees.

When Eickhoff can't find that curveball right away, outings like this can happen. He allowed four hits and walked two before being lifted from what was due to be a shorter outing anyway. He was having a perfectly fine spring before this, so one bad day doesn't matter much.
