Browns RE Desmond Bryant underwent wrist surgery and is out indefinitely.

Coach Mike Pettine is unsure if Bryant will be ready for Week 1, but did say injured reserve is not on the table. Bryant remains an underrated 3-4 lineman, as he can push the pocket and play stout run defense. He'll be missed. With Bryant out, Phil Taylor will man the nose with Ahtyba Rubin and Billy Winn flanking him. Armonty Bryant and Ishmaa'ily Kitchen are quality reserves.

Johnny Manziel is struggling -- and continues to struggle -- with the Browns' playbook.

We all got a glimpse of it when Manziel was asked by Jon Gruden in a sit-down interview during Monday night's telecast to spit out a play from OC Kyle Shanahan's playbook. He stumbled over his words before eventually getting it out. It's to be expected from a rookie like Manziel, who is coming from a spread offense with simple, one-, two-, or three-word plays. Receiver Andrew Hawkins admitted the players in the huddle "are still helping him a little bit." Manziel can focus on the playbook as Brian Hoyer's backup. It's going to take time.

Contract-year RT Joe Barksdale wants to re-sign with the Rams.

Barksdale has flown under the radar in St. Louis. The former third-round pick of the Raiders appeared in all 16 games last season, making 13 starts, and graded out as a top-eight right tackle at Pro Football Focus. He's a plus pass protector. Barksdale was a four-star high school recruit to LSU.

Giants second-year S Cooper Taylor will undergo foot surgery and may miss the season.

Coach Tom Coughlin said injured reserve is a possibility. Taylor suffered the injury in the Giants' second preseason game, and it's believed to be to his sesamoid bone. It's the same bone MLB Jon Beason hurt. Taylor was competing for a hybrid linebacker-type role on defense, as a bigger safety at 6'4/228.

ESPN Texans reporter Tania Ganguli observes third-round TE C.J. Fiedorowicz "can do everything."

"Zero problems catching the ball," Ganguli added. The Texans and Broncos are holding joint practices this week, and Fiedorowicz continues to line up as the starting in-line tight end while getting red-zone work. He's an NFL-ready blocker and drew loose Rob Gronkowski comps coming out of Iowa. Coach Bill O'Brien plans to feature his tight ends. Fiedorowicz might be a waiver-wire favorite at some point. He's not yet worth drafting in standard-sized leagues.

Michael Crabtree admitted he wasn't healthy or himself in the eight games he played last season after returning from a torn Achilles'.

"I was fast enough to be on the field," Crabtree said. "But I wasn't me." Crabtree revealed last week that his weight ballooned up to 230 pounds last season. He's back in shape, and says he "can't wait to get out there" this year. Crabtree is a big-time blow-up candidate as the 49ers' clear No. 1 receiver and Colin Kaepernick's go-to guy. There's value in his late-fourth-round ADP.

Lions DT Nick Fairley said his "eating habits have gotten in the way the past couple weeks," and he's now up to 315 pounds.

This explains why Fairley is running with the second-team defense, instead of next to Ndamukong Suh with the starters. Fairley wants to play at 305. In fairness to Fairley, the Lions have been all over the map with where they want his playing weight. Earlier in the year, he was too light, but now he's too heavy. It should only be a matter of time before he's back with the No. 1 defense.

Second-round rookie Jarvis Landry said he's now rotating in the slot position with Brandon Gibson.

We always expected Landry to overtake Gibson and Rishard Matthews this year. It's a great sign that he's pushing so hard with two-plus weeks before Week 1. Landry isn't on the re-draft radar yet, but he could certainly find himself there before the year is up. He's an ideal slot man in the mold of Hines Ward, and Ryan Tannehill showed a penchant for targeting that position last year.
