Tyler Wilson pitched four innings of one-run ball Monday in his start against the Red Sox.

Wilson kept himself in the mix for a rotation spot today in lowering his spring ERA from 6.14 to 5.30. It still seems more likely that Jayson Aquino will be the choice there, though.

Marco Hernandez went 2-for-2 with a double Monday, raising his spring average to .407.

Hernandez has an 1.189 OPS in 54 at-bats, so he's done everything he possibly can to win a bench spot. It's probably down to him and Steve Selsky to become Boston's 25th man. Hernandez's ability to play short and second would come in real handy, particularly since Brock Holt isn't particularly strong at those spots. Selsky could be a right-handed platoonmate for Mitch Moreland at first as well as a backup outfielder.

Mark Trumbo had three hits, including a couple of doubles, Monday against the Red Sox.

It's a start. Trumbo had been hitting just .177 with one extra-base hit (a double) in 41 at-bats this spring.

Craig Gentry went 2-for-3 with a triple Monday against the Red Sox.

Over the concussion issues that plagued him last year, Gentry has made a nice case for a spot on the Orioles bench, hitting .320 with a .414 OBP, two homers and five steals in 50 at-bats. It's hard to tell just what the Orioles are going to do with their bench, but another guy who swings righty and plays plus defense in the outfield corners could come in handy there.

Tyler Thornburg (shoulder) will undergo testing -- likely an MRI -- on Tuesday.

Thornburg was scratched from a scheduled Grapefruit League appearance Monday due to an upper right trapezius spasm. He's also battled a "dead arm" phase this spring, as he's been limited to just two spring outings. The testing "is going to hopefully give us more information on what we're actually dealing with here," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "What the root cause to a spasm is, that I don't know at this point."

Zack Wheeler shut out the Marlins for five innings Monday as a Mets split-squad won 5-0.

Wheeler allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three in easily his best outing of the spring. It might just be enough to put him in the season-opening rotation with Steven Matz seemingly likely to land on the disabled list. We're still not high on him for this year, but he's more interesting in NL-only leagues now.
Mar 27 - 5:13 PM

Tom Koehler yielded four runs -- all of them unearned -- in 5 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to a Mets split-squad.

Like Adam Conley and Dan Straily, Koehler is struggling this spring. Still, it doesn't seem to have place his rotation spot in any doubt. Koehler has allowed 13 runs -- eight earned -- in 14 1/3 innings. He's struck out 15, but he's also walked nine in 13 1/3 innings. He had the third-most walks in the NL in both 2015 and 2016.

Chris Stewart (groin) caught a pitching machine on Monday.

Stewart said his strained left groin felt fine, although he admitted that he didn't really push it and won't know much about his status until he does. The backup catcher thinks he'll be ready for Opening Day.
