Impending free agent DE Malik Jackson said he would "love to stay" with the Broncos but understands it's a business.
"So for me it’s one of those things I would love to stay here and just kinda continue to start here with my boys," said Jackson Wednesday on PFT Live. "But you know it is a business and I gotta feed my family so we’ll see what happens." Jackson said he would have no problem playing under the franchise tag, though the Broncos are more likely to use that on Von Miller if they can't work out a long-term agreement. Jackson certainly helped his stock by harassing Cam Newton throughout Super Bowl 50.
$10.85 million of Drew Brees' salary became guaranteed on Wednesday.
The Saints were never expected to part ways with Brees, though signing him to a contract extension makes sense because it would lower his absurd $30 million cap hit for 2016. New Orleans has already cleared cap space this offseason by releasing David Hawthorne, Jahri Evans and Ramon Humber. Dannell Ellerbe has also agreed to take a pay cut.
Giants MLB Jon Beason announced his retirement from the NFL after nine seasons.
Word surfaced Wednesday morning that the Giants were releasing the 31-year-old. Instead of ending his career as a released player, Beason is opting for retirement. Beason was the 25th overall pick of the 2005 draft by the Panthers and spent the first six-and-a-half seasons of his career in Carolina before being traded to the Giants midway through the 2013 campaign. He appeared in all 48 games from 2005-2007 before injuries tore his career apart. Beason has battled numerous knee and foot issues and needed another knee surgery this offseason. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time first-team All-Pro.
Free agent DB De'Ante Saunders has been indicted on an improperly handling of firearms in a motor vehicle charge stemming from his December 25 citation in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
Saunders was a member of the Browns' practice squad at the time and was arrested along with ex-teammate OLB Armonty Bryant. Saunders was let go with a citation early Christmas morning, while Bryant was arrested on felony drug charges for having prescription pills without a valid prescription. Bryant has been indicted on two counts of felony drug possession.
Browns OLB Armonty Bryant has been indicted on two counts of felony drug possession stemming from his December 25 arrest in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
Former Browns DB De'Ante Saunders has been indicted for improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. The two are scheduled to be arraigned in court on February 24. Highway patrol troopers found guns, ammo, and prescription drugs Adderall and OxyCodone in the car early Christmas morning. Saunders was released from the practice squad, and Bryant was benched for the final two games of the season after registering 5.5 sacks on the year.
ABC Philadelphia reports investigators are recommending the District Attorney's office file criminal charges against LeSean McCoy for his alleged assault last Sunday.
Arrest warrants for McCoy and and three other alleged assailants are expected to be served Wednesday or Thursday. McCoy is being accused of assaulting two off-duty police officers at a Philadelphia nightclub last Saturday night/Sunday morning. This has a long way to go still, but it's possible McCoy serves time on Exempt List. Karlos Williams' fantasy stock is on the rise.
TitanInsider's Terry McCormick wonders if the Titans could be interested in free agent Doug Martin.
McCormick is simply connecting the dots, as new Titans GM Jon Robinson was hired away from the Bucs and obviously has a familiarity with Martin. Martin has expressed his desire to re-sign with Tampa Bay, but running backs typically chase the highest dollar since their shelf lives are much shorter. The Titans have a mound of money to blow and a desperate need at running back.
Saints WLB Dannell Ellerbe has taken a pay cut to remain in New Orleans.
Owed $5.2 million in salary and bonuses with a $5.9 million cap charge, Ellerbe was never coming back at that price. Ellerbe appeared in six games in his first season with New Orleans after being acquired in the Kenny Stills trade. He made four starts, but missed large chunks of the season with injuries. 30-year-old Ellerbe has appeared in just seven games over the last two years.
