Eddie Butler (shoulder) allowed three runs on two hits and two walks over four innings in his first rehab start with High-A Modesto Saturday.

Butler got his pitch count up to 58 and reportedly hit 96 mph on the radar gun, so it was a positive showing all in all. The Rockies are hoping that the young right-hander will be ready to rejoin the rotation not long after the All-Star break.

Kevin Siegrist (forearm, shoulder) walked two but threw two-thirds of a scoreless inning in his first rehab appearance with Double-A Springfield.

It's not clear how many appearances Siegrist will need before being activated, but he was seem to have a good shot to return immediately after the All-Star break. With Sam Freeman almost surely set to stick around, the Cardinals figure to go with three lefties in the bullpen.

Rangers signed RHP Erik Hamren to a minor league contract.

Hamren had been in independent ball, posting a 2.41 ERA with 42 strikeouts over 37 1/3 relief innings. The 27-year-old last pitched at Double-A when in pro ball and hasn't been in the majors since 2011.

Jake Smolinski went 0-for-3 at the plate in his return to the lineup Saturday.

Smolinski was forced to leave Friday's game after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch, but he was back out there the next day. The 25-year-old has picked up eight hits in his first 17 at-bats with the Rangers.

Corey Dickerson went 2-for-3 and drew a walk in his return to action Saturday.

Dickerson hadn't played since tweaking his wrist while making an attempt at a diving catch during Tuesday's game. It shouldn't be an issue for him going forward, especially with the All-Star break coming up.
Jul 13 - 3:56 AM

Ian Desmond went 2-for-5 with a double in his return to action Saturday.

Desmond sat out Friday after leaving Thursday game when he was hit on the right hand by a pitch, but he'll be fine. The Nationals' shortstop is batting .243/.294/.431 for the season.
Jul 13 - 3:56 AM

Adrian Gonzalez went 2-for-4 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth Saturday as the Dodgers edged the Padres 1-0.

Gonzalez doubled off Kevin Quackenbush in the ninth and came around to score on A.J. Ellis's sac fly to give Kenley Jansen his first win of the year.

Filling in for Josh Beckett, Paul Maholm held the Padres scoreless for six innings on Saturday.

Maholm entered with a 5.18 ERA and he hadn't pitched more than 2 1/3 innings in an outing in two months, so of course he combined on a shutout of the Padres. He allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out four while throwing 65 pitches in his six innings. It's the first time since April 14, 2013 that he's escaped a start without allowing a run.
