The Athletics discussed a multi-year deal with Marcus Semien this offseason.

They also had brief discussions with Khris Davis. Per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's were mulling a five-year deal with Semien and though nothing came of it, the shortstop would be open to revisiting those talks. "Every player wants to make sure they’re doing what’s right for them and their family," he said. "But ever since I broke my wrist, nothing’s happening and I’m hitting below .200, so I don’t know. We haven’t talked since the spring." Semien is under contract through 2020 so obviously there's no sense of urgency here.

According to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Twins and Braves are not expected to complete their Jaime Garcia trade on Thursday night but the deal is "very close to final."

The trade is expected to be a one-for-one swap with the Braves acquiring a minor leaguer from the Twins. Per Berardino, the Braves are paying only a small portion of Garcia's remaining $4.79 million salary with Minnesota covering the rest. The two sides are sifting through medical records as we speak. That process could take a while given Garcia's lengthy injury history. Assuming all the medical reports check out, Garcia could be in line to make his Twins debut this weekend against the Tigers.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Astros are not in "serious talks" for Sonny Gray.

Per Heyman, Houston is "looking elsewhere" right now. That conflicts with a report by MLB Network's Jon Morosi, who said earlier today that talks were "heating up" between the A's and Astros. It's possible the Astros balked at Oakland's asking price for Gray but with the trade deadline over a week away, there's still time for the sides to strike a deal. Jeff Samardzija could be a fallback option for the Astros if they lose out on Gray, who is also being pursued by the Yankees and Indians.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Yankees remain open to acquiring a first baseman.

The Yankees acquired Todd Frazier in a blockbuster trade with the White Sox Tuesday night but they may not be done yet. With Frazier handling the hot corner, Chase Headley will move into a first-base platoon with rookie Garrett Cooper. The Yankees are satisfied with that alignment but that won't stop them from pursing Yonder Alonso and maybe even Lucas Duda. The Yankees are trying to close the gap on the Red Sox, who hold a four-game lead over them in the AL East.

Austin Hedges (concussion) has rejoined the Padres in San Francisco.

Hedges was having trouble with his depth perception but returned to normal after a few days of vision training. The Padres are saying he suffered a "very, very minor" concussion. Hedges felt good after taking some swings on Thursday and it wouldn't be a surprise if he returned from the DL when first eligible.

Freddie Freeman is in the Braves' lineup Thursday against the Dodgers.

Freeman left Wednesday's game early after coming down with an illness and is still feeling the effects of it, but got the green light for Thursday's game anyway. He'll man third base and bat third against Dodgers right-hander Brandon McCarthy.

Asdrubal Cabrera has been taking ground balls at third base.

A shortstop by trade, Cabera has been filling in for Neil Walker at second base. With Jose Reyes excelling at shortstop and Walker nearing a return from the disabled list, it looks like Cabrera could be headed to the hot corner. Manager Terry Collins also acknowledged that getting Cabrera reps at third base may make him more appealing to teams at the trade deadline. Cabrera has made one just one appearance at third base since debuting in 2007.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Dellin Betances "is not going anywhere."

New York's bullpen is looking crowded following the additions of David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle, leading some to wonder if Betances could be on his way out. However, Cashman quickly shot down any thought of trading the right-hander, citing his four All-Star appearances and his connection to New York as a "homegrown local guy." "I don't really like to address speculation," said Cashman. "But I can tell you that Dellin Betances is not going anywhere." The 29-year-old hasn't been as dominant as usual this year, but he still boasts a brilliant 16.95 K/9 over 35 outings for the Bronx Bombers.
