David Ortiz is back in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Rangers.
Manager John Farrell gave Ortiz a couple days off to clear his head. He's batting in his usual No. 3 spot behind Mookie Betts and ahead of Hanley Ramirez. The 39-year-old has hit just .200 this month with a .322 slugging percentage.
Xander Bogaerts (forearm) is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rangers.
Bogaerts took a pitch off his left forearm Thursday and is still feeling a bit sore. Brock Holt will start at shortstop and bat seventh. Bogaerts is hitless on Boston's road trip (0-for-15).
Kevin Correia is expected to be granted his release by the Giants, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports.
Correia had a June 1 opt out. Even with all of the Giants' injuries, he hadn't been called up to the majors yet this season. He had a 3.58 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Sacramento.
Xander Bogaerts is getting Saturday off because of soreness in his bruised left forearm.
Bogaerts left Thursday's game after a HBP, and while he played Friday, he obviously was less than 100 percent. Brock Holt will fill in at shortstop tonight.
Jeff Bianchi declined an assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket and became a free agent.
Bianchi was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Thursday. He'll take a look and see if anyone else needs a utilityman.
Braves signed catcher Ryan Lavarnway to a minor league contract.
Jose Yepez landed on the DL in Triple-A, so the Braves needed an extra catcher around. Lavarnway was let go by the Orioles earlier this week.
The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reports that the Diamondbacks are moving closer to putting Addison Reed back into the closer's role.
Brad Ziegler is a better pitcher than Reed, but the Diamondbacks would still be better off with Ziegler in a setup role, since he can be better spotted against right-handed hitters then than he can as the ninth-inning guy. Reed doesn't have such significiant platoon splits.
Rangers purchased the contract of RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez from Triple-A Round Rock.
Gonzalez, a 2013 first-round pick, will make his major league debut tonight against the Red Sox after going 3-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 26/19 K/BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings for Triple-A Round Rock. When he exits, hopefully he'll do a little sword dance as he comes off the mound.
