Cubs prospect second baseman Arismendy Alcantara went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple on Wednesday for Triple-A Iowa.

Alcantara is hitting .289/.306/.467 with six doubles, a triple, and three stolen bases in his first 13 games in Triple-A. He has not walked enough in the first two weeks and strikes out more than is preferable for a leadoff hitter, but he has the talent to hit .300 in the major leagues while stealing 20+ bases and hitting 30+ doubles. With Darwin Barney hitting .120/.290/.120 at the major league level, it looks like Alcantara could get promoted in early June once the "Super Two" deadline has passed.

Brewers recalled UTIL Elian Herrera from Triple-A Nashville.

Herrera will provide depth for the Milwaukee bench while Lyle Overbay is away on paternity leave. Herrera is a .251/.336/.328 career hitter in the major leagues.

Brewers placed 1B Lyle Overbay on the paternity leave list.

Paternity leave can last between one and three days. Elian Herrera was called up in a corresponding move.

Royals prospect Miguel Almonte tossed a one-hit shutout on Wednesday, striking out seven for High-A Wilmington.

Almonte has a 2.60 ERA through three starts, and has allowed only nine hits, five walks, and one hit batsman while striking out 18 batters through 17 1/3 innings. He possesses a mid-90s fastball and the potential for a dynamite change-up, but he has a tendency to throw hittable strikes while missing the corners. This can lead to rough outings, such as his second start of the season, when he allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings -- including two home runs, a double, and a triple.

Eduardo Nunez will be the Twins' 26th man for the second half of Thursday's doubleheader vs. the Blue Jays.

MLB's rulebook dictates that Nunez can't officially be added to the Twins' active roster until after the first game is over. Nunez was acquired from the Yankees on April 7 for minor league left-hander Miguel Slubaran. The 26-year-old infielder owns a weak .267/.313/.379 career batting line in the majors and is a poor defender.

Brewers pitching prospect Jed Bradley threw six shutout innings Wednesday for High-A Brevard County.

Bradley struck out five and allowed only two singles in his effort. While he has had two consecutive good starts, Bradley is in his third consecutive season with High-A Brevard County and sports a 4.70 ERA for the season, which is only slightly lower than his 4.93 career ERA in Brevard County. He was one of two first round picks for the Brewers in 2011, neither of which have been able to reach the major leagues.

Astros purchased the contract of LHP Raul Valdes from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Valdes was designated for assignment by Houston at the end of spring training, but he cleared waivers and will now have an opportunity to lock down a big-league bullpen job. The 36-year-old had fanned six batters over 3 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level.
Apr 17 - 11:23 AM

Astros optioned LHP Kevin Chapman to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Chapman had allowed five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief this season for Houston. The 26-year-old lefty should get another shot later in the summer.
