Mariners outfield prospect Gabriel Guerrero went 2-for-5 on Friday for High-A High Desert, raising his season line to .313/.353/.464.

Guerrero has hit .375/.403/.594 with five doubles and three home runs during his 14-game hitting streak, and has hit .348/.372/.551 during the month of July. Guerrero has hit a respectable .291/.333/.455 against righties, but has browbeaten lefties to a .380/.415/.490 line.

Cardinals designated C George Kottaras for assignment.

The veteran backstop became expendable with Friday's acquisition of A.J. Pierzynski. He appeared in just four games during his brief stay in St. Louis. He shouldn't have much difficulty finding another organization willing to take a shot on him.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Giants are the team in discussions with the Red Sox about acquiring Jake Peavy.

Jen Royle of the Boston Herald reported earlier that a National League club was close to acquiring the Boston right-hander, and the destination now appears to be known. With the continued uncertainty on the health of Matt Cain, Peavy would be a nice addition for rotation depth. His fantasy value would also increase with a return to the National League.

Juan Francisco is not in the Blue Jays starting lineup for Saturday's afternoon tilt against the Yankees.

It's merely a routine day of rest for Francisco against southpaw Chris Capuano. Shawn Tolleson will get the start at third base while Dan Johnson functions as the Jays designated hitter.

Athletics prospect first baseman Matt Olson went 1-for-3 with a home run and two walks on Friday for High-A Stockton.

Olson showed off his "three true outcome" tendencies, as he also struck out twice, rendering the fielders moot. He is having a monster season, hitting .243/.396/.528 with 19 doubles and 29 home runs, as well as 91 walks and 104 strikeouts.
Jul 26 - 11:02 AM

Athletics prospect first baseman Max Muncy went 1-for-4 with a home run on Friday for Double-A Midland.

Muncy is hitting .276/.397/.426 with 20 doubles, three triples, and seven home runs for the season, but he has been experiencing a power surge as of late, hitting .286/.440/.476 with two doubles, one triple, and four home runs in July. Muncy has the talent to be major league first baseman, but the Athletics are in win-now mode, and Matt Olson's monster season could prevent Muncy from getting a shot.

According to Jen Royle of the Boston Herald, an unnamed National League team is close to acquiring Jake Peavy from the Red Sox.

The only known NL squad rumored to have serious interest in Peavy, the Cardinals, are not believed to be the suitor in this potential deal. While nothing appears imminent, it's a situation worth monitoring. Brandon Workman would likely return to the Red Sox rotation in the event Peavy is dealt.
Jul 26 - 10:52 AM

Jon Lester admitted Friday that even if he is traded before next week's non-waiver trade deadline, he would be open to returning to the Red Sox as a free agent next season.

Lester hasn't hidden his desire to remain with the Red Sox, and as they currently sit in the cellar of the American League East, it's an idea that may make sense for them as an organization. If they can flip the star southpaw for the best prospects they can get at the deadline, and then re-sign him over the Winter, the organization will be strengthened.
