Tommy La Stella went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored in a win over the Cubs on Sunday.

La Stella scored a run in the second inning, but his big damage came on a bases-loaded double in the seventh. La Stella is batting .292/.371/.357 with 12 runs and 17 RBI since being promoted, and with Dan Uggla appearing to be on the way out, La Stella's playing time will be unchallenged in the second half.

Arismendy Alcantara went 2-for-5 with his first career home run in Sunday's loss to the Braves.

Alcantara also doubled in the game, driving in two with his homer against Julio Teheran in the sixth inning. The 22-year-old has been impressive in his first five games with the Cubs, batting .391 (9-for-23) with three doubles, a triple, a stolen base, five RBI and six runs scored. His promotion was supposed to be a short-lived stint while Darwin Barney was away on paternity leave, but he's certainly forcing Cubs brass to reconsider that idea with his play to this point.
Jul 13 - 7:43 PM

Julio Teheran allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings in a win over the Cubs on Sunday.

It wasn't Teheran's best start, as he allowed two home runs among the Cubs' seven hits, but it was good enough for his ninth win. Even with the mediocre start, it was a fantastic first half for the right-hander. Teheran owns a 2.71 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 116/30 K/BB ratio over 136 1/3 innings. He'll go to his first All-Star Game on Tuesday as a result of his strong season thus far.
Jul 13 - 7:38 PM

Travis Wood got roughed up by the Braves on Sunday, allowing seven runs over six innings in a loss.

Wood gave up seven hits and three walks on the day, striking out four. The seven runs allowed snapped a string of seven straight starts allowing three earned runs or fewer. Wood hasn't won since June 15, falling to 7-8 with the loss, and he owns a 4.96 ERA and 1.49 WHIP at the break.
Jul 13 - 7:33 PM

Clay Buchholz struck out 12 while allowing just three hits in an 11-0 shutout of the Astros on Sunday.

It's been a season to forget thus far for the 29-year-old, but Sunday reminded fans just how dominant Buchholz can be when he's on. The right-hander allowed just three singles and didn't walk a batter, using 109 pitches to finish his first shutout of 2014. The start could give him some confidence heading into the season's second half.
Jul 13 - 7:26 PM

Xander Bogaerts had an RBI and scored two runs in a win over the Astros on Sunday.

Bogaerts actually went hitless in the game, but he found ways to contribute nonetheless. The 21-year-old hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning, and he scored in the second and seventh innings in the Red Sox' rout. He finishes the first half with a meager .235/.311/.348 line, but he's talented enough to turn that around in the second half.
Jul 13 - 7:24 PM

Christian Vazquez went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Sunday's win over the Astros.

Vazquez is now 5-for-11 with five RBI, three doubles and three runs scored since being recalled on July 9. Despite his offensive output thus far, Vazquez isn't in the majors for his offense. This is likely just a flash in the pan, but a welcome one from the Red Sox' perspective.

Astros optioned RHP David Martinez to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The 26-year-old appeared in three games with the Astros, allowing four run over his seven innings of work (5.14 ERA). He should get another chance with the big league club at some point in the second half of the season.
