Christian Friedrich blanked the Diamondbacks for seven innings on Friday to win as a starter for the first time since July 2012.

Friedrich made 16 starts for the Rockies as a rookie in 2012 and three more in 2014 (he missed all of 2013) before shifting to the pen. The Padres picked him off the scrap heap over the winter and decided to try him again as a starter. Lo and behold, it's worked, with the left-hander amassing a 1.65 ERA in his first three starts. We still don't trust him for fantasy purposes. For one thing, he's walked 10 in 16 1/3 innings.

Robbie Ray allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Padres.

The Diamondbacks need Ray to step it up with Shelby Miller and Rubby De La Rosa absent, but here he is 2-4 with a 4.67 ERA. Quite a bit more was expected from him going into the season. He's still fine to own in NL-only leagues, but he's not really even a streaming option in mixed leagues right now.

Yangervis Solarte hit a pair of homers to knock in four runs against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

It's the second two-homer game of Solarte's career. The switch-hitter was batting cleanup tonight in his sixth game back from the disabled list. Still, it's probably not enough to make him of use in the typical mixed league.

Derek Norris went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and two walks against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

The Padres need more from Norris, not just so that they can win some games, but also because they want him to drive up his trade value in advance of the deadline. He's hit .224 with four homers in May after finishing April with a .156 average and one homer.
May 28 - 1:25 AM

Pat Dean beat the Mariners by allowing two runs over seven innings and striking out eight on Friday.

He walked none. Dean's fastball is well below average, forcing him to be on point with his slider and changeup. He's more than held his own through two major league starts, but we wouldn't recommend him in AL-only leagues.
May 28 - 1:22 AM

Felix Hernandez gave up six runs in six innings Friday in a loss to the Twins.

With his stuff in obvious decline, this is the kind of thing that's going to happen to Hernandez when he's not on top of his game. He's done a great job of mixing up his approach and keeping hitters off balance this year, but his margin for error just isn't what it was. He stands at 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA at the moment.
May 28 - 1:20 AM

Joe Mauer went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and a walk against the Mariners on Friday.

Mauer seems to be finding his stroke again after a rough three weeks to open May. He's been a fine player overall this year, with his .281 average, .389 OBP and .401 slugging percentage. Still, with four homers, 15 runs scored and 15 RBI in 46 games, he hasn't been able to do much for his fantasy owners.
May 28 - 1:18 AM

Matt Shoemaker took a shutout into the ninth before being charged with two runs in 8 1/3 innings Friday in a defeat of the Astros.

Shoemaker struck out 11 before giving up singles to two of the three batters he faced in the ninth. Cam Bedrosian entered then and allowed both inherited runners to score, ending Shoemaker's scoreless streak that started with 7 1/3 shutout frames against the Orioles on Saturday. Shoemaker still seems risky in mixed leagues, but he should certainly be grabbed in any AL-only leagues in which he's available.
