Jason Motte (shoulder) will face live hitters Friday at AT&T Park.

He'll throw two simulated innings—one 20-pitch frame followed by another 15-pitch inning. A shoulder strain has sidelined Motte since spring training. Facing live hitters is usually the last step before beginning a rehab assignment. Assuming there are no setbacks, Motte should join the Rockies' bullpen later this month.

Brandon Phillips went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Thursday's win over the Brewers.

It was the second consecutive game with a homer for Phillips, who also doubled in the contest. The Reds don't have a lot of incentive to win games this year, but Phillips has asserted his place in the lineup -- after they tried to trade him over the winter -- by hitting three homers with 11 RBI and 13 runs scored in 25 games. The second baseman is hitting .293/.323/.478 overall.

Chase Anderson allowed seven runs -- six earned -- over five innings in a loss to the Reds on Thursday.

Anderson walked two and gave up six hits, two of which left the yard. That's been a problem for the right-hander of late -- he's allowed eight home runs in his last four starts, all losses. He has a 6.44 ERA and 1.84 WHIP through six starts, with an eye on stopping the bleeding Tuesday at the Marlins.

Daniel Descalso (hand) served as the designated hitter in an extended spring training game on Thursday.

He contributed three hits including a pair of doubles. The plan is for Descalso to play five innings at second base on Friday. The 29-year-old is coming back from a fractured left hand he suffered in spring training.

Alfredo Simon allowed three runs over 7 2/3 innings in Thursday's win over the Brewers.

The win was the first of the year for Simon. He had his sinker working in this one, recording 16 ground ball outs to just two in the air. He also struck out five. It was something to build on for the 34-year-old, who still owns a 9.86 ERA and 2.19 WHIP through Thursday's start. He'll look to make it two in a row Tuesday against the Pirates.

Jorge De La Rosa (groin) will throw a bullpen Friday at the team's spring training facility in Scottsdale, Arizona.

If that goes well, he'll begin a rehab assignment on Monday. In addition to his groin issue, De La Rosa has also struggled with his velocity. He's averaged just 90.1 mph on his fastball this season. The left-hander is 1-3 this year with a miserable 10.18 ERA.

Christian Yelich hit a two-run home run and the Marlins shut out the Diamondbacks 4-0 on Thursday.

Yelich connected in the eight inning for his second homer in three games. It was his only hit in four at-bats. The outfielder has cooled slightly after a torrid start but is still hitting .330/.443/.511 with three homers, 14 RBI and 16 runs scored overall.
May 5 - 11:25 PM

Marcell Ozuna went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Ozuna has been on a tear in recent days, as Thursday was his fourth multi-hit game in his last 10 contests. In that span, he's 12-for-37 (.324) with three home runs, six RBI and six runs scored. His line sits at .250/.306/.460 overall.
