Maikel Franco is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Rockies.

Maybe it's not a bad idea to give him a breather. Franco went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Monday and owns a disappointing .221/.281/.377 batting line through 41 games this season. Andres Blanco will start at third base.

Red Sox optioned RHP Hector Velazquez to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The newly-promoted Sam Travis will take his place on the active roster. The Red Sox were already planning to skip Velazquez's next turn after he was knocked around for six runs over five innings against the A's last Thursday.

Red Sox purchased the contract of 1B Sam Travis from Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Red Sox sent down Hector Velazquez to clear a spot on the active roster. Travis got off to a slow start in April, but he was batting .333/.389/.561 with three home runs and 13 RBI this month. He's likely to see most of his at-bats against left-handers in his first stint in the majors.

Carlos Santana will make another start in right field Tuesday against the Reds.

Santana had quite the scare in right field on Monday, but fortunately he's fine. He'll move back to first base on Wednesday when the series shifts to Cleveland.
May 23 - 2:49 PM

Lonnie Chisenhall is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Reds.

He'll take a seat against left-hander Amir Garrett. Bradley Zimmer is also on the bench with Carlos Santana playing right field under National League rules. Daniel Robertson is starting in center field.

Joe Blanton (shoulder) played catch Tuesday.

As noted by Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post, Blanton was playing catch with teammate Sammy Solis (elbow) as both pitchers are working their way back from injuries. Blanton struggled to the tune of a 9.49 ERA through 12 1/3 innings before landing on the disabled list last week with right shoulder inflammation. The Nationals haven't mapped out a specific timetable for his return, but he's already moving in the right direction.

Sammy Solis (elbow) played catch Tuesday.

It's a step in the right direction for Solis, who is working his way back from elbow nerve inflammation. However, there's no clear timetable for his return.
May 23 - 2:40 PM

Seth Lugo (elbow) is set to make his second minor league rehab start on Tuesday.

Lugo, who is coming back from a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, allowed two hits with no strikeouts and no walks over 3 2/3 scoreless innings in his first rehab start with High-A St. Lucie last Thursday. Assuming no setbacks, he appears on track for a return in the early part of June.
