Tigers manager Brad Ausmus confirmed Wednesday that Matt Boyd has won a rotation spot.

Rule 5 pick Justin Haley has secured a spot on the Twins' Opening Day roster.

Haley was acquired from the Angels in December after being selected from the Red Sox in December's Rule 5 Draft. The 25-year-old posted a 4.96 ERA and 13/4 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 innings this spring. Barring injury, the right-hander will have to stay on the active roster all season or be offered back to his original club. Twins manager Paul Molitor also confirmed Wednesday that Michael Tonkin will be in the Opening Day bullpen.

Tyson Ross (thoracic outlet syndrome surgery) is expected to throw a simulated game on Saturday.

Ross is expected to stretch things out to around 45 pitches over three innings. He'll be a bit behind to begin the year after surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, but the Rangers are optimistic that he could join the rotation by early May. Ross posted a 3.07 ERA with 9.2 K/9 between 2013-2015, so there's some nice upside if he comes back feeling good.

Andrew Cashner (biceps) is expected to throw three innings on Friday against the Royals.

Cashner, who is making his way back from right biceps tendinitis, will pitch in relief of Cole Hamels. He's going to start the year on the disabled list, but it sounds like he could be ready relatively soon.

Adrian Beltre underwent an MRI on his right calf on Monday.

Fortunately, the test showed that it's not considered a significant strain. The Rangers are calling Beltre day-to-day for now, so while it's not ideal, the feeling is that he'll be ready for the season.

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Wednesday that Gregory Polanco won't travel with the team to Montreal due to "a technical glitch" with his passport.

The issue is related to travel from the World Baseball Classic. It's expected to be cleared up soon and won't impact his ability to play when the team travels to Toronto later this season. More importantly, Polanco hasn't played since Thursday due to discomfort in his left shoulder. The Pirates remain optimistic about his ability to be ready for Opening Day.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated Wednesday that the club is still thinking about having Aaron Judge start the season in the minors.

"He needs to play, that's the bottom line," Girardi told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. For his part, Judge has swung the bat really well this spring, hitting .327/.393/.564 with three homers and a 12/6 K/BB ratio in 22 games. Aaron Hicks has also played well, but it's probably time to see what Judge can do.

Aaron Sanchez could throw a side session this weekend rather than pitch in a minor league game.

Sanchez popped a blister in his pitching hand during Monday's Grapefruit League start, but it's not a major concern at this time. He's still lined up to take his first turn in the rotation.
