Kendrys Morales went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored as the Royals defeated the Twins 7-1 on Monday.

Morales doubled in a run in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie, then knocked in another run with a single in the eighth to make it 5-1 at the time. Morales had a dreary 2014 season but has come out of the gates swinging to start this season, having hit two home runs, knocked in nine runs, and compiled a .358/.424/.566 triple-slash line. Morales has hit safely in 12 of 13 games so far.

Paulo Orlando finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run triple to help the Royals top the Twins on Monday.

Orlando has carved out a niche for himself in the triples department, as his two-run three-bagger in the eighth inning marked his fifth of the young season. Coming into the evening, Sam Fuld was the only other batter in baseball with at least three triples. In 29 plate appearances, Orlando is batting .269/.345/.654. Orlando, by the way, got another start against a right-handed starting pitcher in Kyle Gibson, something worth noting.

Kyle Gibson took the loss on Monday against the Royals, serving up four runs (three earned) over five innings.

Gibson has shown subpar command and a severe inability to miss bats in two of three starts to begin the season. The right-hander allowed only four hits to the Royals, but issued four walks and recorded zero strikeouts -- his second zero-strikeout start already. Gibson will bring a 5.87 ERA, a 1.96 WHIP, and a 3/9 K/BB ratio over 15 1/3 innings into his next start against the Mariners in Seattle.
Apr 20 - 11:13 PM

Edinson Volquez was superb again on Monday, holding the Twins to one run over seven innings en route to a win.

The Twins' only run scored in the second inning on a throwing error by Eric Hosmer. Volquez allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five, giving him three excellent starts to begin the regular season following a miserable spring. He's 2-1 with a 1.99 ERA, a 0.75 WHIP, and a 17/3 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings. Volquez will look to keep it going over the weekend on the road against the White Sox.
Apr 20 - 11:11 PM

Jake Arrieta was the victor on Monday, tossing one-run ball over seven innings to help the Cubs to a 5-2 win over the Pirates.

Arrieta allowed an RBI single to Andrew McCutchen in the first inning but was unflappable the rest of the way. Overall, he gave up four hits, walked none, and struck out seven to improve to 2-1. He carries an impressive 1.74 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and a 19/4 K/BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings. Arrieta matches up with the division rival Reds on the road next.
Apr 20 - 11:05 PM

A.J. Burnett remained winless following Monday's start against the Cubs, allowing one run over six innings in a no-decision.

Burnett allowed eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out only one batter, but was still able to limit the Cubs to just the one run. That leaves the right-hander 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and a 16/5 K/BB ratio in 18 innings. Burnett can potentially pick up his first win of the season in Arizona against the Diamondbacks in his next outing.
Apr 20 - 11:03 PM

Starling Marte hit a ninth-inning solo home run, but it was too late to help the Pirates stage a comeback against the Cubs on Monday.

Marte belted a Zac Rosscup offering to left field in the ninth to make it a 5-2 game, but it was too little, too late for the Pirates. Marte, who finished 1-for-4 on Monday, has been on a power surge lately, homering in three out of his last four games. Other than that, though, he hasn't done much at the dish as he's batting .178/.208/.467.
Apr 20 - 10:58 PM

Jorge Soler finished with four hits and a pair of runs scored in five trips to the plate in Monday's win versus the Pirates.

Soler singled and scored in the fifth, then doubled and scored in the seventh. The young outfielder is on a seven-game hitting streak and has safely hit in 10 of 12 games overall. He owns an impressive .320/.364/.520 slash line with two home runs and nine RBI to begin the season.
