Josh Tomlin was pounded for eight runs -- four earned -- across 3 2/3 frames in Monday's loss to the Rangers.

The Rangers jumped on Tomlin early with a single and homer to kick off the game and they didn't let up. He yielded nine hits on the day and struck out only one. One of these kind of outings was bound to come for Tomlin eventually. Luckily for him, half of the runs were unearned so his ERA wasn't blown up too badly. He'll try to bounce back this weekend versus the Royals.

Ian Desmond doubled and ripped a two-run homer in Monday's victory over the Indians.

Desmond's two-run shot two batters into the game proved to be a hint at what was to come for the Rangers' offense, as they pounded out nine runs over the first four innings. The shortstop-turned-left-fielder-turned-center-fielder has been a beast in May, sporting a .345/.371/.527 batting line with three home runs, 18 RBI and six stolen bases.

Bryce Harper exited Monday's game against the Phillies after being hit in the right knee by a pitch.

Harper was hit in the knee by Jeremy Hellickson in the top of the seventh inning and remained in the game initially, but Chris Heisey replaced him in right field in the bottom of the frame. The Nationals should pass along an update at some point on Monday evening.

Marlon Byrd went 4-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's loss to the Rangers.

The Indians had a couple longballs in this one, but unfortunately for them they were pretty meaningless. After the Rangers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the top of the fourth, Mike Napoli smashed a long solo shot in the sixth and Byrd added a blast to left in the seventh. Byrd will turn 39 in August but has remained pretty productive, hitting .270/.328/.459 with five homers and 19 RBI.

Royals signed LHP Joe Beimel to a minor league contract.

The Royals could use the depth in Triple-A after Brian Duensing and David Huff recently left the organization. The 39-year-old Beimel was recently given a clean bill of health from Dr. James Andrews after a minor league deal with the Marlins fell through. The southpaw will have a couple of outings in Arizona before joining Omaha.

Hector Rondon nailed down his ninth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning in Monday's win over the Dodgers.

Entering to protect a two-run lead, Rondon cruised through the ninth on 13 pitches, striking out Howie Kendrick and inducing a couple groundouts. The Cubs lost starter Jason Hammel to a hamstring cramp after two innings but still managed to toss a one-hitter. Rondon hasn't pitched a ton this season because the Cubs are crushing everyone, but he's a perfect 9-for-9 in save opportunities and boasts a 1.04 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 27/2 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings.

Braves sent INF Reid Brignac outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Brignac passed through waivers after being designated for assignment on Friday. The 30-year-old will serve as organizational depth in Triple-A.
May 30 - 8:47 PM

Alex Wood recorded seven strikeouts but only lasted five innings Monday, allowing two runs in a loss to the Cubs.

Wood gave up only one extra-base hit on the day, but he also permitted six singles and issued three free passes. The good news is that the tight triceps which forced him to be scratched from his last start didn't appear to be an issue. Wood will be back on the hill this weekend against his former team, the Braves, at home.
