Cubs designated LHP Clayton Richard for assignment.

Richard gets the pink slip despite tossing six innings of one-run ball in a spot start Sunday. The reality is that the Cubs just don't have room for him following the acquisition of Dan Haren. He's earned his spot as a depth option, though, assuming he clears waivers.

Robinson Cano is back at second base for the Mariners on Monday.

Cano has been limited to designated hitter duty the last couple days due to a minor abdominal strain, but he's ready to play his position again with the DH not available in Colorado. Ketel Marte is starting in center field.

Athletics optioned OF Jake Smolinski to Triple-A Nashville.

Smolinski is sent packing despite hitting .320/.379/.640 in 11 games since joining the A's. The club had to pick an outfielder to go with Coco Crisp back from the disabled list.

Athletics optioned RHP Dan Otero to Triple-A Nashville.

Otero has been scored upon in five out of his last eight appearances. Arnold Leon is taking his spot in the bullpen.
Aug 3 - 5:25 PM

Athletics recalled RHP Arnold Leon from Triple-A Nashville.

Leon holds a 3.74 ERA and 10/1 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 relief innings with the big club this season. He'll be used in long relief.
Aug 3 - 5:24 PM

Athletics activated OF Coco Crisp from the 60-day disabled list.

Crisp is finally ready to give it a go again after being sidelined since mid-May with his ongoing neck issue. He had only two hits in 45 at-bats before going on the disabled list and remains a major health risk going forward. However, the A's plan to start him in left field and bat him second in the lineup as long as he's able to stay on the field.
Aug 3 - 5:23 PM

Kyle Lobstein (shoulder) has resumed throwing from a mound.

Lobstein has been on the shelf since late May with soreness in his left shoulder. There remains no timetable for his return, but it would seem he'd have a shot to contribute at some point this season with the Tigers if he can progress without any setbacks.
Aug 3 - 4:44 PM

David Carpenter (shoulder) has resumed a throwing program.

He was cleared after a second opinion showed sufficient healing with his pitching shoulder. There's no timetable for Carpenter's return at the moment, but he should be ready to rejoin the Nationals' bullpen sometime this month.
